Eccles Weekly News
October 6, 2022
Dear Eccles Families,
I am very excited to see you this evening at our Color Dash! This will be a great time for kids and families to run and enjoy some good ol’ messy fun.
Also, please make sure you have signed up for conferences. We are looking forward to building our partnership with you this year.
Our character trait for the month of September was responsibility. Our students are responsible! Last Friday we came together as a school community to recognize the many different ways our students demonstrate responsibility on a daily basis and honor several of our students who really embodied the responsibility characteristic this past month. We also pulled names to spin the wheel to earn prizes and combined ROAR tickets to “Fill the bucket”. We nearly filled it! The kids were very excited. Once we fill it, our school earns a Spirit Day. And last, but certainly not least, we welcomed our kindergarteners into our community. This was a special moment for our youngest and newest members of our community and we really wanted to help them feel safe and welcome in their school.
Big thanks to Ms. Siewell, our school counselor; Mrs. Dooley, our instructional specialist; and our 6th grade helpers, Hope, Lydia, Neah, Maci and Ainsley for their help in organizing for and running our assembly.
For the month of October, our character traits are kindness and empathy. In addition to classroom lessons about kindness and empathy led by our school counselor, we will highlight kindness and empathy over the entire month.
See you soon!
Kelly

We want to help you get to know who we are. Each week we will highlight a couple of staff members. Enjoy getting to know a little bit about us!
Meet Mrs. Butterfield!
Mrs Butterfield’s current state of mind is excited to get the year rolling and exhausted from her two young kids at home. She is part of the 5th grade team and has been teaching for 11 years-8 here in Canby. You will frequently hear her say, “Literally, Love it, Wow, Cool.” She lives with her husband Jesse (who she met in middle school!) and their two daughters, dancing queen Hazel (almost 5) and smiley Maeve (7 months). She spent many childhood nights reading Shel Silvestein and The Giving Tree is still one of her favorite books. Mrs. Butterfield’s hero is her dad because he sacrificed everything for his kids while staying humble, kind, helping, and loving. Say, “Hi!” the next time you see Mrs. Butterfield.
Meet Mrs. Smidt!
Mrs. Smidt is a member of the 3rd grade team and has been teaching in Canby for 16 years. You will often hear her say “For real!?” Mrs. Smidt lives with her husband Ryan and their three kids: Hailey (13), Gavin (10), and Brynn (10). She has a pet fish, Flash, and a dog named Ace. Her favorite writers are Kristin Hannah and Katherine Applegate and her hero of fiction is the BFG. She values loyalty, kindness, and fun in her friends and her Grandma Hazel is her hero in real life. Her motto is “Tomorrow is a new day. Begin it well,” by Ralph Waldo Emerson. Say, “Hi!” the next time you see Mrs. Smidt.
Art Literacy Volunteer Opportunity!
We would like to invite you to volunteer with the art literacy program. There will be three artists this year, one for each trimester. You will be asked to attend an informational meeting where you will learn all you need to know in order to lead your classroom through the presentation of each artist. We will lead you through the entire lesson so you are confident with the process. You will see the keynote presentation, how to run it and learn about the art lesson. Then we will actually do the art project together. We will be able to answer any of your questions. When you teach the lesson in the classroom, the teacher will be there to help and assist you. No art skills or background is required.
Thank you so much for your help! Be sure to complete a volunteer application with the Canby School District, if you haven't already. We look forward to seeing you.
- Deana Calcagno and Ann Johnson
Lost & Found is Growing
Please remember to label your students clothes with their last name so that staff and students can easily find items left at school. Our lost and found is growing fast (not an exaggeration—one wagon was filled in one day). All items will be donated to The Canby Center at the end of Winter Break, Spring Break, and the last day of school.
How can you track a missing item down? Parents and students may come in before school starts, or students may come to the office during one of their recesses. Our lost and found is currently located down the hall and an office staff member can take you down to look.
After-School Child Care
Great news! We have open spots available in our new After-school Child Care Program. We will now fill those spots on a first-come first-served basis. To register, please fill out this Child Care Interest Form, and program director Molly Martinez will contact you with next steps.
Volunteers
Looking to volunteer in your student’s classroom or for upcoming events? If you did not complete this process last year or are a new incoming family, an application must be submitted through the Canby School District.
Here’s what you need to know.
- This must be pre-arranged with the teacher and/or specialist that you are assisting.
- All new* volunteers must be registered and pass a background check in order to volunteer for any classroom, field trip, or activity on-site.
- All volunteers must sign in and out upon entry and exit of the school building.
We look forward to having you join us!
Meals at School
We are excited to welcome back our broadened meal selections this year, including the salad bar! Your children may qualify for free meals or for reduced-price meals, and now offer expanded income guidelines to qualify more families.
If you plan to have your child eat school-provided breakfast or lunch, please fill out a Meal Application online at https://www.ode.state.or.us/apps/frlapp - Our district ensures that our nutrition programs are easily accessible to all families.
> Click here to put money on your child's lunch account <
Meals will always be provided to students, no matter their application status or meal plan balance.
Health Reminders
As school begins and we are starting to enter the cold and flu season, please remember to review our district and school health 'stay home guidelines'. If you have any questions about whether a student should stay home, please don't hesitate to contact the office and we can put you in touch with our Health Assistant or District Nurse. We appreciate your help in keeping not only your student, but all other students & families healthy this school year.
***Please remember to send in any medication for your students, which need to be signed in with our Health Assistant (prescription, non-prescription, inhalers, etc).
