Teacher Appreciation Week
Thank you Samuelson teachers for all that you do. We know you have faced many adversities this year and have done it with grace. We appreciate your dedication to our students and their families. You truly are amazing!
Kindergarten Sign Up
Starting kindergarten is an exciting time for you and your child and we want the sign-up process to go as smoothly as possible for your family.
Kindergarten Sign Up has begun for all families. Your child must be five years old on or before September 15 to be eligible. Find the information you need to start enrollment below.
WHAT DO I NEED?
Everyone is required to provide the following documents:*
- Birth certificate;
- Immunization records;
- Photo ID;
- Resident verification (may include, but not limited to: recent utility bill, current vehicle registration, recent DHS paperwork, signed lease agreement or notarized letter from your landlord.)
*All documentation must be received before sign-up can be completed.
HOW DO I SIGN UP?
Current DMPS Preschool Students, please follow the information sent home by your preschool to complete sign-up. You do not need to visit the elementary school to complete this process.
Younger siblings of current DMPS Elementary Students who reside in that school’s attendance area may take the above listed documents to their elementary school to complete sign-up. If you do not live in the attendance area, you will need to be approved for Within
District Transfer before you can complete sign-up at your school.
All other families, please visit the Welcome Center located at 1000 Porter Avenue with all the above listed documents to enroll your student(s). If you prefer to sign-up via email, please email kindergarten@dmschools.org to start the process. Please wait for the response before sending your documents.

ISASP Testing for 3rd-5th Grade
Des Moines Public School students in grades 3 through 11 will take the Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress (ISASP) in May. This assessment is required by the Iowa Department of Education for federal accountability purposes. Below are the plans to administer the assessment at South Union. Please read carefully to ensure you know the plan for your student.
Samuelson 3rd-5th Grade In–Person Testing
- Monday, May 10: Testing from 8:00-11:00 (Reading)
- Tuesday, May 11: Testing from 8:00-11:00 (Language/Writing)
- Wednesday, May 12: Testing from 8:00-11:00 (Math)
- Thursday, May 13: (5th grade only) Testing from 8:00-11:00 (Science)
Virtual Student Information (for parents who chose to have their child test in-person)
Testing Date: May 14, 2021
Time: 7:45-2:00
Schedule:
7:45-8:00 – Arrival/Breakfast *your student may arrive before 7:45, our doors open at 7:30
8:00-9:00 – Reading
9:00-9:15 – Break
9:15-10:15 – Math
10:15- 10:45 – Break
10:45-11:15 – Lunch
11:15-12:45 – Language/Writing
12:45 - 1:00 – Break
1:00 - 2:00 – Science (5th grade only)
2:00 – Dismissal
Breakfast and lunch will be offered to your student during this day of testing. Masks are mandatory at all times , only removed for breakfast and lunch service. Students will need to bring their computers and chargers. We recommend students bring a free reading book and water bottle. Students will be seated with social distancing and in a location where they will not need to go in the halls for restroom breaks. Breakfast and lunch will be served in their classroom. Breaks will not be mingled with other students in the building.
*3rd and 4th grade testing ends at 12:45. If your student needs additional time to complete any tests, we will call/text you to arrange a later pick up time . Otherwise, please plan to pick up your student at 1:00 at the kindergarten doors (NE corner of the building - window is marked with K ) .
*5th grade testing ends at 2:00. If your student needs additional time to complete any tests, we will call/text you to arrange a later pick up time. Otherwise, please plan to pick up your student at 2:00 at the kindergarten doors (NE corner of the building- window is marked with K) .
Results: We anticipate sending test results out to all DMPS families via Infinite Campus mid-summer.
