BOLD
Blended and Online Learning Design in BJBS (#16, 28 May)
Speaking of the start of session, below you'll find a collection of new (and used) resources to help you get up and running, along with a range of other treasures focused around the recent Global Accessibility week and items relevant to thinking about CSU's Learning Experience Framework. So when you can take a breath from marking, don't forget to come back and take a look around. If you have something great to share, the ASCILITE 2018 call for participation is now open (submissions close July 13).
News from the Sub Dean (L&T)
G'day All
No that's not me in the picture. Read on to find out why it's there.
- Many thanks to the 111 L&T Symposium attendees who provided feedback. This was discussed at a recent Faculty L&T Committee meeting and will inform planning for 2019, likely to be in the 201960 mid-session break (late August) in Bathurst.
- We bought microphones (like the one in the pic!) for the symposium workshop on creating videos with smartphones. We've sent them to each CSU campus for your use. In Bathurst and Wagga contact the Learning Resources Unit, Albury Kath Dalton, Canberra Kellie Smyth, Goulburn Nicole Thurbon, PMQ Philip Hua.
- End of session often means a jump in special consideration applications so make sure you're familiar with the new special considerations workflow.
- The new Subject Outline Tool is now live for 201860 outlines and beyond. Rather than trawling through emails, check out this page of the wiki for all you need to know.
New (and used) support for the start of session
Preparing for session with CSUwiki
This is a cross-Faculty initiative, that involves DLT and the three Faculties working collaboratively to develop shared resources. It has zero resourcing other than the passionate belief of those involved that we're well and truly over having great resources hidden like buried treasure. It has a long journey ahead, but a one-stop, searchable shop linking to all things L&T is a journey worth travelling. If you want to know more, get involved or feed forward, contact Carole or Warwick.
What can your landing page do for you?
- creating a better bio pic
- creating orientation videos
- embedding interactive pages, such as Padlet
- embedding pages that tell the story of your subject, such as Adobe Spark
- how to address each student personally, by their name, as they enter your site
- adding a gallery of videos
...and a whole lot more. I know I've said this a million times, but think about how you use that space. It's important.
Alternatives to Padlet?
For those of you who use Padlet a lot, that means clearing and reusing your old Padlets, or deleting those created since April that you are no longer using.
Or you might want to find an alternative. The current alternatives don't have the same broad level of functionality - some are good for brainstorming, others for gathering resources etc), so there's not one recommendation that we can offer - it depends on how you use it. If you need to talk through options, raise an SRS request.
Opportunities to learn
Don't forget that all PD sessions - upcoming, as well as past recordings, can be found in the Faculty PD Calendar. You can also check out other professional opportunities on the institutional PD calendar or the sessional staff PD site.
Click on the title (below) of the session you'd like to attend to download a calendar invitation.
Let’s get Personal about Learning (May 31, 1-2pm)
Personalising learning means, among other things, shaping learning and teaching around the different ways students learn. This session will help you understand how adaptive release of learning content and activities can support learning, and when adaptive release may be appropriate for your students.
It ain’t rocket science: Four ELLaN strategies you can implement today! (various campuses - see the PD calendar for details)
Explore these four simple subject delivery strategies which will support students’ language, literacy and numeracy skills.
Feedback-driven learning: Simple strategies that support literacy and numeracy development (June 7, Wagga campus, 10-10:30am)
This session provides an overview of effective literacy and numeracy feedback: expectations, structure, time-efficient techniques, and strategies for ensuring students engage with it.
Our pick of the latest open learning opportunities
- Online Coffee Courses - there's a new coffee course from ANU starting up on Monday 4 June on peer assessment and feedback. Five blog posts, one per day, each taking about 15-20 minutes to work through with lots of conversation happening in the comments. Go to the blog and subscribe for updates.
- Data visualisation - whether it's for your research or to enhance access to and insights from data you are sharing with students in your modules, data visualisation has a lot to offer. There's a new 6-week course ($199) on Data Visualisation with Python - no previous Python coding needed. On the free front, you might like the Future Learn course (QUT - add it to your wishlist til it's offered again), or if you're impatient, this one from Coursera starts on June 4. If that all seems too much, you might like to watch a recording of a recent session from the Research Office on how SPAN can help you with data visualisations.
Debbie Wheeler locked in as our ALLaN
I joined CSU in 2012 and was most recently coordinating the implementation of the English Language, Literacy and Numeracy Policy. Language, literacy, and numeracy skills are critical for the academic and professional success of our students, so I am pleased that this ALLaN Faculty Liaison role will give me the opportunity to assist you to explore very practical support strategies that are efficient, effective, and contextualised to the needs of your subject, discipline, and students. You are most welcome to contact me anytime on (07) 5529 4140 or dwheeler@csu.edu.au with any questions, issues, or ideas you may have. I look forward to working with you!

The benefits of study groups
So many of our students create their own Facebook groups - but do we do enough to support? The article has some suggestions.

Focus on accessibility
- Some key takeaways were from Dr Paul Harpur (UQ) who emphasised just how important ebooks are for many students who rely on screen readers - the time savings are immense. Others outlined how they have used Bb Ally, ATBar and ReadSpeaker to significantly improve accessibility across their online offerings.
- You might also like to recap how our how own Nicole Sugden ensures all her videos are accessible through using Dragon Naturally Speaking.
- For those wanting a broader review of key issues around equity and inclusion, you might like to listen to this Beyond the Lecturn podcast with Dr Ryan Naylor from La Trobe.
- Miriam Edwards, as part of an AIF grant, drew together a number of recommendations to make your subjects more accessible. These are available on our wiki.
