College Go Week
NCP students participated in daily College Go Week activities during the week of September 20-24. College Go Week is dedicated to helping students learn about colleges as well as possible careers.
Each school held a variety of activities to celebrate the week. At Parke Heritage High School and Rockville Elementary, teachers decorated their doors with their college colors. Parke Heritage Middle School held a poster contest in which each Pack Time designed a poster with a designated Indiana college. The winning poster was Mrs. Haley Roach’s Pack Time, which consisted of information about Manchester College.
At the high school, activities included setting up parchment accounts as well as researching what requirements their future jobs might require. This research ranged from vocational certificates, apprenticeships, associate degrees, bachelor degrees, and graduate degrees.
Dress for Success
Dress-up days were also held at PHMS, TRES and RES. For Thursday’s “Dress for Success- dress for your future career,” K-2 students from RES and TRES were selected for the most creative costumes. Prizes were sponsored by the Parke County Community Foundation and the Promise Indiana Parke County. The prizes included a piggy bank, pencil and a certificate for a monetary incentive to open a College 529 account. Ms. Whitney Anderson’s Pack Time class was the winner of the dress-up contest with the highest percentage of students participating.

A big thank you to the parents who donated apples for the activities.

The class smelled the apples cooking all afternoon. The students added those apples to a flattened biscuit and baked them.
Many thanks to these moms and to Connie Bridge for donating the apples to first grade and to Michelle Soltermann for helping out with this project.
PENNY BOATS
Sixth grade science students in Mrs. Haley Roach’s class were challenged to build a boat that would be able to hold the most pennies and still float. The winning penny boat design was Amy Reynen and Marissa Lienbrient (at right). Their boat held 141 pennies and seven dice! Mrs. Roach ran out of pennies so dice were added.
The students did this as an introduction to the Engineering Design Process. They had limited supplies and tried to build a boat to hold the most pennies while using as few of resources as possible.
NATIVE AMERICAN SHELTERS
Fifth grade students at Rockville Elementary have been studying Native Americans. As a part of their studies, students created three-dimensional models of a Native American home. These could include longhouses, teepees, wigwams, pueblos, igloos, earth homes and more. The homes were to be made with items the students had at home. As a part of the project, the students presented their project to their classmates.
The shelters have been on display in the hallway for other students to see.

Taylor Snell
Not every student can say they have a state park as their backyard. For Taylor Snell, a Turkey Run Elementary fourth grade student, living at the Turkey Run State Park provides her many opportunities to enjoy nature and the beauty of the park.
Taylor and her family moved to the Park in August. Her dad is the new assistant manager of the park, which allows the family to live on the park grounds. Their house is across from his office so he can walk to work.
Living at the state park allows Taylor to go hiking with her family. They will hike all year round as the weather allows.
“My favorite trail is number three,” said Taylor. “I like that creeks go through it and you have to walk in the creek.”
While living at the state park has its perks, it has taken Taylor a bit to get used to the quiet of the countryside during the night. During the day, she claims that the park can be busy and noisy.
The Snell family previously lived on property that belonged to Summit Lake State Park, which is located near New Castle. They lived there for five years before making the move to TR State Park.
Combining her enjoyment of nature and art, Taylor will spend time outside drawing wildlife that she may see. She likes to sit in the yard and draw the first animal that she sees walking through the woods. She admits that sometimes it takes a while to actually see an animal to draw.
Taylor also enjoys going camping with her family. They have gone camping in their backyard, at campgrounds and at Fall Creek State Park in Tennessee.
“I enjoy meeting other kids,” said Taylor. “I like talking to the other campers and playing with them on the playground.”
In addition to hiking and camping, Taylor takes advantage of other park activities available to her. She has been horseback riding, swimming in the Inn pool and has visited the Nature Center.
“I like going across the suspension bridge, but I was scared of it at first,” admits Taylor. “I had to tell myself to not look down. Now it’s not so bad. I can cross it without thinking about it.”
In addition to nature and artwork, Taylor has musical interests. She has taken piano, violin and recorder lessons. She has also taken dance lessons since second grade. She also uses her creative side to bake goodies for her family.
“Jazz is my favorite dance,” said Taylor. “I like the gracefulness and flexibility that dancing in general provides me.”
She is hoping to join a new dance studio and the Girl Scouts as she settles into her new community and school.
