December Jefferson Update
Winter 2023
A Note From the Principal:
This can be such a magical time of year and yet it is a time when we can feel our stress ratchet to high levels. The pace at which we move can become almost frantic at times. Remember to slow down and enjoy the time you have with your family and friends. These are the times when fond memories are made by focusing on that which is important.
Classes are finishing up Fall material or focusing on particular projects and academics that vary between classes and grades. The one area that remains consistent is our push to have students read every night for 30 minutes. The more kids read the better they will get at it. Please encourage reading in any way you can. If you need suggestions please reach out to your child’s teacher.
Thank you for the gift of your children. Each and every day is special in one way or another because of the kids and who they are. I genuinely enjoy my interactions with them from jokes to a needed moment of guidance or a simple story to share. Have a wonderful holiday season and remember to pay attention to the things that matter.

Important Safety Patrol Announcement:
Parents,
The safety of your child is of the utmost importance to us! Please be sure to use the crosswalks and car drop off/pick up lane when coming to and from school. Please do not park across the street and have the student crossing in the middle of the road. Please drop them off in the appropriate areas or on the same side of the street as the school to avoid any unsafe situations. Thank you so much!

Counselor's Corner:
Hello Jefferson Families!
The holidays are a great time for families to practice empathy and understanding. Some students get overwhelmed by all the lights, noises, changes in routine and environment. Please check in with your child to see how they are doing.
Children are extremely capable of feeling and showing empathy, but simply telling them how to behave toward others isn’t always enough. Empathy is a learned skill. To teach empathy, adults need to actively show kids how to think outside of their own experience and attempt to understand and show compassion for things they don’t naturally experience — and the holiday season is the perfect time to start!
Have a wonderful winter break!
Sincerely,
Heidi Hixson

MLL Update:
Our primary focus for the 23/24 school year continues to be the speaking domain of English.
What is the speaking domain? 🗣️
We invite you to please continue in supporting this goal from home.
This month, I encourage you to engage your student(s) in a conversation about their perfect day, perfect snow day, and/or perfect vacation from start to finish and use transitional works, such as First, Then, Next, Furthermore, Lastly, Finally, etc. It could be completely made-up or real! At school, students are expected to retell events using transitional words, so encourage your student(s) to try these out with you!
Or tryout one of the previous month's suggestions...
In October, the activity was no matter where you are – whether it's in the car, at the grocery store, or at the park- encouraging your student(s) to describe their surroundings or an item using colors, shapes, numbers, and/or how an item is used.
In November, we encouraged you to engage your student(s) in a conversation about their school day, encouraging them to retell it from start to finish and use transitional words, such as First, Then, Next, Furthermore, Lastly, Finally, etc.
These activities can be practiced in your home language and English. By engaging in these activities in your home language, students will develop skills that can be transferred to their proficiency in English.

Student Council News:
Local business, Guild Mortgage, donated brand new coats to Jefferson Elementary for those in need as the weather turns. Our Student Council worked to organize the coats for hand out. We are fortunate to be part of such a caring community!
