As the leaves fall off the trees and the temperature drops, it is evident we are in the fall season. We are also one-third of the way through our first semester which means our first progress reports will go out on Monday. While you can always access Skyward to check on progress in class, and you can set up to receive a weekly update in classes, we send out this report as a checkpoint for everyone to celebrate current progress or make a plan to improve grades.

Teachers are available by phone, email, and google classroom. Students can ask questions or schedule times before and after school to get more help. We also offer help in T3 which offers 30 minutes a week of extra support three times a week for students during the school day. Beginning last week we started the Trojan Learning Center which offers an opportunity for more support after school. Check out the information further down in this week's newsletter.

Much like planning for the change in weather, the progress report provides a time to make adjustments to see an improvement in one or more classes. I hope students take advantage of these resources as they navigate their six classes this semester.

Trojan Learning Center (TLC) is now available to support students!

TLC provides a quiet supported place for students to work on current assignments, catch up on missing assignments, or work on "Incompletes" from previous semesters.

TLC meets Monday-Thursday from 2:45-4:45.

* All students need to arrive by 2:45 to participate. If they arrive later, they need to have a note from the teacher they were with after school.

* All students sign in and sign out to track their attendance.

* Students taking the late bus home need to stay in TLC until 4:45 and then head out to catch the bus.

* Students driving themselves home or getting picked up can leave at other times.

We are going to be administering the Healthy Youth Survey (HYS) again this year to our students. Due to COVID we have not been able to participate in this survey since 2018. The HYS asks questions regarding numerous different aspects of the students life such as eating and sleeping habits, substance use and their school experiences. We will be giving this survey to students on Wednesday October 20. If you are not wanting your student to participate in this survey please call the office at (360) 398-8111 or email kgookstetter@meridian.wednet.edu and let them know and we will make sure that they have a different activity to do during that time. National Apple Day falls on October 21 and is a day dedicated entirely to celebrating all things apple: apple pie, apple sauce, apple crisp… The list goes on and on. This holiday reminds us to appreciate the apple in its myriad forms. On October 21st, pick out your favorite variety and celebrate with apple lovers across the world.

Held during the third full week of October each year, National School Bus Safety Week is an active and evolving public education program and an excellent way for parents, students, teachers, motorists, school bus operators, school administrators, and other interested parties - to join forces and address the importance of school bus safety. Designed to promote school bus safety, school districts throughout the country observe School Bus Safety Week.

Being present in class is vital to be successful in school. We want to encourage all of our students to be at school every day! If you are missing school, you are missing out on learning!

If your kids miss a day or even part of a day of school for whatever reason, please contact our attendance secretary, Mrs. McMains by either phone (360-318-2260) or email (tgmcmains@meridian.wednet.edu)with the reason for the absence. If they are going to miss because of an illness, please call or email in the morning and let us know! If there is a planned absence, please contact her and she will take care of notifying teachers. If she is unable to answer the phone right at that moment, please feel free to leave the information on her voicemail.

The MHS office is open 7:30am - 3:30pm, Monday through Friday. To enter the building, you will need to go to the door by the auditorium. The doors to the main building will be open form 7:30am-8:00am every morning. The doors will be locked at 8:00am and unlocked again at 2:30pm. There will be someone stationed at the door to help students and families upon their arrival at school during school hours.
