OV NEWS and EVENTS
OV Families,
Some of you may have already heard that we are making a slight change to how we run our three grade-level lunches. Starting Monday, February 5th, students will be sitting with the classmates they are with the period before lunch time. The reason for this is that we continue to see a rise in irresponsible behavior during lunches and the efforts we have made to eliminate these behaviors have not been successful. We try to avoid widespread changes like these, but the need to reestablish “community” in the cafeteria important to us.
Unfortunately, the issue isn't isolated to just a few students. We've made numerous attempts to address behavioral concerns during lunches through various approaches, including class meetings with administrators to reiterate expectations post-break, Crew Time lessons on proper behavior, individual and group consequences when expectations aren't met, involvement of parent volunteers before school and during lunches, and countless one-on-one conversations about behavior. Given that these interventions haven't produced the desired results, our staff has collectively decided that we need a community-wide change to address these behaviors. It's crucial for all students to grasp that this is a community issue that requires everyone's responsibility.
Today, we held an all-school meeting during Crew Time to explain to students why we're implementing this change. We emphasized that it may feel like a consequence, but that’s not the intent. The aim is to introduce extra structure to gain control over recurring behaviors and ultimately eliminate them. And to clarify, students will only be asked to sit in their assigned seats for the first 15 minutes of lunch. After the first 15 minutes, students will be released to go outside with friends, or move to another table and sit with friends.
We care about our students and want all students to feel secure and comfortable during their lunchtime. This is a temporary change to address some behavior that has been difficult to eliminate. We look forward to making quick changes in behavior and return to an environment where kids get to choose where they sit and can be positive members of our community.

Be an extra set of eyes and volunteer for our CHAMPS program!
CHAMPS is looking for adult volunteers, including parents, stepparents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, and others, who can dedicate their time before school, during lunch hours, and/or potentially assist teachers in the classroom. At this time, we are seeking volunteers who can commit to a consistent schedule, such as a weekly commitment on specific days and times. We will offer a sporadic volunteering opportunities once the program is more established.
Volunteers can choose to come daily, weekly, or biweekly from Monday to Thursday but are required to commit to that chosen time slot (all (35 minutes commitments):
- Before school: 7:35 am - 8:10 am
- 6th Grade lunch: 11:15 am - 11:50 am
- 7th Grade lunch: 12:15 pm - 12:50 pm
- 8th Grade lunch: 10:20 am - 10:55 pm
Or, on Friday (short day):
- Before school: 7:35 am - 8:10 am
- 6th Grade lunch: 10:30 am - 11:05 am
- 7th Grade lunch: 11:20 am - 11:55 am
- 8th Grade lunch: 9:40 am - 10:15 pm
For the safety of our students, all volunteers must be cleared by the Mukilteo School District's background check, which remains valid for a period of two years. Our Family Engagement Liaison is available to assist you with this procedure.

HAPPENING IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT
FAMILY LISTENING TOUR
Dear families,
We want to hear from you! To help with that, you are invited to a family listening tour in February and March. The intent is to gather input about communication and engagement with families, especially from families for whom English is not their first language. We’re planning four in-person events, one in each quadrant of the district. The in-person listening sessions will be followed by an online survey to all families about the same topics. The results will be used to guide the continued development of the Language Access Plan and the district’s Strategic Plan.
What is the format for the events?
Your hosts for the listening sessions will be:
- Diane Bradford, Communications and Public Relations Director
- Dr. Elena Kelley, Multilingual Education and Student Supports Director
- Mary Williams, Equity, Family and Community Partnerships Director
School principals and family engagement liaisons are participating as well.
In addition to sharing your thoughts and questions, you can also get assistance with Schoology, ParentSquare, and language services. Dinner will be provided and childcare and interpreters will be available upon request. Please let us know if you plan to attend on the attached ParentSquare form so we can plan for dietary needs, childcare needs and interpreters.
