What is the HMS Advisory Class?
We are excited to announce that we have an Advisory program to help address the unique academic, social, and emotional needs of our adolescent middle school students. Schools often “talk” about educating “the whole child,” but then fail to put any deliberate systems in place to teach students skills not specifically related to academic or elective content in their area.
In the past, our Advisory class was focused on mastery of academic content through flex-tutorial groups and study hall time for school work completion. This year, we have re-conceptualized the purpose of our Advisory class to focus on the specific developmental needs of our middle school age students.
A properly conceptualized Advisory program is a critical component of middle school because it connects a teacher (the advisor) with a group of students (the advisees) to provide academic and social-emotional support, and to strengthen the community of the school.
A purposeful Advisory program supports students in building positive, meaningful relationships with one or more caring adults at school; helps students develop positive relationships with their peers; and provides a safe place for students to strengthen their academic and social-emotional competencies, explore their interests more deeply, and nurture the development of new skills and talents.
Our HMS Advisory program is built around week-long themes of activities focused on the following purposes:
Building student-to-student affiliation
Supporting academic readiness
Strengthening advisor-advisee relationships
Developing communication and social skills
Energizing and re-engaging in school
Reflecting and recalibrating
The first two weeks of Advisory is focused on building relationships, learning Advisory routines, and making personal connections to the Advisory group. Other activities addressed in Advisory over the next five weeks include:
Setting academic goals and creating concrete plans to achieve them
Brainstorming and discussing what respect looks like in a school setting
Learning how effort, persistence, and personal responsibility lead to academic success
Exploring how empathy can be put into action to create a safer school environment
To help keep you in the loop, we will be sharing the topics we will be addressing in Advisory regularly through our Friday HMS Insider. We encourage you to talk about Advisory with your child regularly throughout the school year.
