CSD Top 3
Your monthly school district newsletter
May 4, 2022
Hello Canby Families,
Staff and students have been busy this spring, and we’d love to share some of what they’ve been up to. Please enjoy this month’s CSD Top 3, those three things we think you’d like to know, plus a wellness tip and lunch menu. Happy reading!
Student Spotlight
The Clackamas Education Service District has had student artwork on display recently for its annual Regional Art Show. Thank you and congratulations to all of Canby’s students who submitted work. All pieces are available to view in an online gallery.
The ESD held an awards event on April 28, when they honored Canby student Leonardo Navarro Gonzalez for winning first place for 8th grade entries with his ink drawing titled “Brave Samurai Avenges Their Fallen Master.” His piece was also chosen from the art show selections for further exhibition with the Youth Arts for Change program of the Clackamas County Arts Alliance, and it will be on display in the lobby of the Clackamas County Public Services building in Oregon City May 4-25. Please join us in applauding Leonardo!
Staff Spotlight
We are excited to be celebrating so many of our staff members this week during Educator Appreciation Week, including our teachers, specialists, counselors, school psychologists, speech & language pathologists, social workers, and nurses for all they do for students in the Canby School District. Last week, we had the chance to honor our secretaries on National Administrative Professionals Day and our principals on Principal Appreciation Day. Next up is School Lunch Hero Day on Friday and National School Nurse Day on May 11! There can never be too many appreciation days because we think our staff deserve thanks every day.
If you have a moment, consider sending an email or hand-drawn card to the wonderful educators in your life.
Open Houses
Three of our elementary schools have held or will hold open houses this spring to celebrate a certain event at their school and to open the doors to the public to see changes made thanks to voters passing the 2020 construction bond. Knight hosted families for a successful Book in Common Family Night. Trost followed with their annual Day of the Child event. Many enjoyed the new playgrounds and before and after photos of the bond work.
Eccles will host the next open house in conjunction with their book fair on Wednesday, May 18 from 6-7:30 p.m.
As we approach the end of the school year, we expect to see some sunshine in our future! With that, it’s important to think about protecting yourself from the sun’s harmful rays. Most people know they ought to protect their skin by limiting time in the sun, wearing clothing to cover skin, and using broad spectrum sunscreens with a SPF value of 15 or higher; but many don’t think about protecting their eyes. Sunlight reflecting off sand or water increases exposure to UV radiation, the FDA says, and increases the risk of developing eye problems. Certain sunglasses can help protect your eyes. Here are some tips from the FDA:
Choose sunglasses with a UV400 rating or “100% UV protection” on the label (dark-tinted or expensive sunglasses don’t necessarily mean better UV protection).
Consider large, wraparound-style frames, which may provide more UV protection because they cover the entire eye socket.
Even if you wear UV absorbing contact lenses, wear quality sunglasses that offer UV protection.
Along with wearing sunglasses, wearing a wide-brim hat and sunscreen can help further protect you from sun exposure.
What's for Lunch?
