The official monthly newsletter of Horning Middle School
Happy Spring Break Horning Families!
Two big announcements: one about our return and dress code, and a second on our state testing which will begin building-wide upon our return.
As we move into the spring and the fourth quarter of the school year, we will be reviewing expectations around the School District of Waukesha dress code, attendance procedures, and cell phone use. There are many things to celebrate and also things we can continually work on to make our middle schools a great place.
Please take a moment to review this information with your student.
Dress Code: Click here to review the Dress Code policy outlined in the middle school student handbook for more information:
A brief description of several areas are below:
Hats, bandanas, hoods, & other headwear are not permitted
Hoodies must be worn with the hood down
Clothing should completely cover the chest, midriff and buttocks
No undergarments should be visible when standing or sitting
No strapless, off the shoulder or low cut tops allowed at school
Any clothing, jewelry, body art, or any accessory advertising alcohol, tobacco or other drugs are at a counter purpose with district AODA programs and therefore deemed inappropriate.
Attendance:
Attendance is extremely important.
Our school wide expectation is that every student is arriving to their scheduled class on time prior to the start of class bell. This will ensure that active learning time is maximized and students are receiving the best learning environment possible.
Students have 3 minutes to transition from one class to the next. This time should be used to prepare for their upcoming class.
Students are able to access their lockers before school, before lunch, after lunch, and at the end of the school day. Students should be utilizing these opportunities to prepare themselves for their early/late classes.
Please do your best to make sure that your technology (iPad) is charged and ready to go at the start of the day. This will ensure classroom time is maximized for learning.
Cell Phone:
The School District of Waukesha has in place a cell phone policy that requires cell phones to be placed in their locker upon entering the school building. The phone should be turned off and left in their locker until they leave at the end of the school day.
Thank you all for helping support us in a successful school year. Working together we can accomplish great things.
Spring FORWARD Testing
Upon our return from Spring Break we will begin administering The Forward Exam which is a standardized achievement test designed to assess what students know in relation to the Wisconsin Academic Standards in the areas of English language arts (ELA), mathematics, science and social studies. In the summer to fall you will receive your child's individual scores. This assessment is also a large component to the State Report card each school receives every year.
Testing subject areas per grade:
Grades 6 and 7: English Language Arts and Math
Grade 8: English Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies
*Horning Middle School 8th graders completed the science and social studies on March 22nd and 23rd.
We will be testing on the following days in April. At the end of this article you will find what our daily schedule looks like to accommodate the testing:
On April 5th and 6th ALL students will be taking the Text Dependent Analysis and the Reading Comprehension tests of the FORWARD exam.
On April 12th and 13th ALL students will be taking the Math and ELA sections of the FORWARD exam.
Make ups will be scheduled as needed, and must be completed before April 28th.
We are asking Families support this assessment in the following ways:
Bring a fully charged iPad
Bring corded headphones, if you have them
Get a good night's rest
Eat a good breakfast
Be ready to show what you know!
We know that your child is more than just a number on a test and appreciate your help with making this the best testing experience we can.

Library News
Important Libray Information
Middle school students may keep library books for three weeks. Books checked out for class may be checked out longer. Throughout the year, overdue notices are emailed to students and families. Library books and language arts novels are included on that overdue list. Please encourage your student to return any overdue books.
Email Communication
As shared in Fall, the School District of Waukesha sends an email communication to the parent/guardian with information about checked out material. This communication is sent daily until the materials are returned to the library. As part of the student registration process families were notified of the communication and provided with the option to opt out of the communication. At any time, parents/guardians of students up to 8th grade can change their opt out status, by using this link.
New this winter, parents/guardians of students in grades 9-11 can opt in and receive a daily communication regarding what books their child has checked out. Have your students identification number and use this link to start getting daily notifications!
Below are a few questions to ask the student about what they are reading:
Tell me about the main character/favorite character in the book you are reading.
What genre is your book and why did you choose that book?
What is the process you take when selecting library materials?
Book Preferences Noted
Parents/Guardians can contact the Library Media Specialist to discuss topics of concern they wish to be noted in our Library system, Destiny. For example, if a child is triggered by ghosts, a note can be made in Destiny that alerts the person checking out the book to the student. For this example a note may say, “Parents request no books on ghosts.” This note will be seen when a child is checking out any physical material. Again, please be sure to opt in to the email communication to monitor what materials are being checked out by your student.
Library staff work with teachers to offer age-appropriate content to all students in the library. However, if a parent/guardian has concerns with the age appropriate content their student has access to, they should contact the school librarian to make note of this in the library system.
We look forward to engaging all readers. Our Library Media Specialist is Josh Rageth, and he can be contacted via email at jrageth@waukesha.k12.wi.us and by phone by 262-970-1358.
Student Council Information
Student Council meets in the library (or cafeteria) from 2:45-3:30. We meet every other Tuesday throughout the year. Applications were due on September 23rd. Students will receive an acceptance notification the week of September 26th-30th. Throughout the year, the Student Council plans and implements events such as dances, spirit days, community service, fundraisers and so much more. We are always looking for new ideas and new hands to help make our school a better place to be! Due to the large number of applicants, we may move our meeting location to the cafeteria and exit out of the cafeteria doors (Door 8.) This meeting location may change based on student participation. We will keep you informed.

School District of Waukesha Annual Asbestos Notification: October 2022
As a result of the federal law AHERA (Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act) all primary and secondary schools are required to develop and implement a plan for managing all building materials which contain asbestos. Included in the AHERA Act is the requirement to notify all parents, guardians and staff members, as well as organizations representing them, of activities and events with the asbestos containing building materials annually as
well as make them aware of the availability of the districts asbestos management plan.
Asbestos has been used in many building materials due to its outstanding insulating and strengthening properties. When it is undisturbed or intact, it poses little hazard to human health. It is only when damage has or may occur that the quality of the school’s management program becomes an issue.
In 1988, all buildings owned, leased, or “under the control of” the School District of Waukesha were inspected by EPA accredited inspectors, with building material samples analyzed by an independent laboratory. Based on the inspection, the School District of Waukesha prepared and the state approved a comprehensive management plan for administering the asbestos located within its buildings, safely and responsibly.
Once every three years, certified inspectors must re-inspect remaining materials. In addition, the rule requires a periodic walk-through (called “surveillance”) in each area containing asbestos every six months.
Short-term workers (outside contractors e.g. telephone repair workers, electricians, etc.) must be provided information regarding the location of asbestos in which they may come into contact. All short-term workers shall contact the lead maintenance person before commencing work.
The School District of Waukesha has a list of the location(s) and type(s) of asbestos containing materials found in the building and a description and timetable for their proper management. A copy of the Asbestos Management Plan is available for review in the school office. Copies are available at twenty-five (25) cents per page. Our goal is to be in full compliance with AHERA. It is our policy to maintain a safe and healthful environment for our students and our staff members. This shall be accomplished by strict enforcement of the policies regarding asbestos by the asbestos manager and the school officials.
The School District of Waukesha also requires that all new building materials introduced into the School District of Waukesha are free from asbestos. For all new buildings/additions, the architect responsible for the design certifies that to the best of their knowledge, no asbestos containing materials are used. If new buildings are acquired, they too will be inspected.
Within the last year, the School District of Waukesha has completed a 6-Month Asbestos Surveillance of remaining materials. Asbestos removal has been conducted in cooperation with the on-going construction activities at:
Bethesda Elementary School
Hadfield Elementary School
Heyer Elementary School
Rose Glen Elementary School
Saratoga STEM
North High School
South High School
