BHS Hosts Annual College Fair
On Tuesday, October 17th, Bloomfield High School hosted its annual college fair in the BHS Gymnasium. Over one hundred colleges/universities, trade schools, and the military attended the event, providing students from both Bloomfield High School and Global Experience Magnet School with the opportunity to network with admissions officers and become better acquainted with the college process.
The college fair provides our students with the opportunity to explore a variety of different colleges/universities at once and learn about the many options they have for higher education. This event continues to grow yearly with more representatives joining each year. Student’s grades 9-12 attended the event and were encouraged to ask questions and get information from any of the schools that interested them.
For the under classmen, the college fair provides them with the time to see how many possibilities there are for them following high school. They can explore all the opportunities and start to make a plan for when they will be taking those next steps. For our upper classmen, the college fair was a chance for them to meet with those colleges/universities that they hope to apply to and narrow down their decisions. With so many admissions representatives on site, they got to speak to someone face to face and get a real feel for the environment of the school, in hopes of narrowing down their list of prospective schools.
Thank you to the BHS Guidance Department for a great event!
BHS Health Students Learned About The Dangers of Distracted Driving
Drunk Driving takes the lives of approximately 14,000 people each year with approximately 4,500 of these deaths being teenagers. Bloomfield High School realizes the importance of educating all of our teenagers on the risks associated with drunk driving, in an effort to prevent them from making poor decision when operating a motor vehicle. This October all health students recently participated in a drinking and driving lab, where the students used drunk goggles and a golf cart to understand and analyze the effects of alcohol on a driver. Students each took a "sober" lap without the goggles and then did a "drunk" lap with the goggles on to simulate the effects of drinking and driving.
The BHS Health Department also partnered with The Save a Life Tour, a program which travels around the world to show firsthand the deadly consequences of unsafe driving practices and choices. On Friday, October 6th, The Save a Life Tour visited BHS and set up a distracted driving simulator which simulated the dangers of texting and driving. Students were able to practice driving on a simulator that interacted with them via text messages, showing them just how fast their life can change from one sent text message while driving.
Thank you to the BHS Health Department for educating our students about these dangers. BHS students learned valuable life lessons, hands on as a part of both of these activities.
BHS Cheerleading and Football Captains Visit Laurel Literacy Academy
On Friday, October 20th, the captains from BHS' Varsity Cheerleading and Football teams visited Laurel Literacy Academy to speak to the students about leadership, being a team player, sportsmanship, and what it takes to be a high school student-athlete. These future Warhawks were very excited to meet with our student-athletes and had tons of questions to ask them. Our captains loved this experience, and we look forward to having many future events like this one. Thank you to our football captains: Davien Kerr, Davion Kerr, and Darrien Foster as well as our cheerleading captains: Mahoganie Wilson-Little, Alexis Lopez and Jachelle Johnson.
BHS Achievement Center Hosts Alumni Event
On Friday, October 20th, BHS' Achievement Center hosted its first alumni event of the year featuring BHS Alum, Jovan Huff. Jovan is currently the owner/operator of Food Trap, a local food truck. Coach Country arranged for Jovan to come to speak to students enrolled in business and culinary classes at BHS, as well as students that utilize the services of the Achievement Center. Jovan relayed his firsthand experience in establishing his business and how he used the knowledge he acquired from BHS and the resources he has at the school to make sure he was successful in both the culinary and business aspects of running his food truck. The presentation was capped off with the students getting a delicious lunch from the food truck. This is just the first of many alumni events that the Achievement Center will be hosting throughout the school year.
