It is about a guy (Joel) who 20 years in the past when a fungal plague started he lost his daughter.He now is a smuggler bringing things in or out of the quarantine zone without asking questions. On a search to get some weapons back he makes a deal with a rebel group and smuggles a girl (Ellie) who is apparently immune to the virus and may be the last hope of mankind. On their journey they encounter many people both good and bad in search of the rebel laboratory in which they will make a cure for the fungal plague. Though at first he is cold and just wants to get the job done he warms up to her and starts caring for the girl. When he finds out she has to die to in order for them to obtain a cure which might or might not stop the plague he goes to great lengths to rescue her. In the end she is saved and they start making a new life for themselves
