What is a Community School?
This means that GES, like many schools in Maryland (over 300) have identified that a large population of their students are living in poverty. The Community Schools Strategy works in partnership with a variety of stakeholders to remove barriers from students, families and communities in order to thrive. Ways a community school does this is by providing an array of wraparound services.
What does a Community Schools Coordinator do?
A Community Schools Coordinator provides comprehensive support and resources that are selected to meet their students’ and families’ needs and interests, which are rooted in the understanding and perspectives of the surrounding community.
What do Community Schools provide?
Through strategic partnerships, community schools work to provide access to high-quality academics, health services, mental health support, academic enrichment, out-of-school time programming, crisis support, adult education classes, leadership development, and more.
Year 1 Update
Community Schools Needs are Determined
Once survey's were completed, all the data collection was reviewed with the Community Schools Steering committee. The Steering Committee involves the Community Schools Coordinator, Principal, Teachers, School Counselors, PTA members and Stakeholders.
As a team, the Steering Committee identified the schools greatest needs based on the data collection. Below are the three areas of need determined. Moving forward GES will implement a plan to meet the need and close the gaps to improve success for all students and families.

Awesome job 4th grade!
The Children’s Mental Health Matters Campaign has been a Maryland tradition for a quarter of a century —bringing together more than 500 school and community organizations annually to support children’s mental health by increasing public awareness, reducing stigma, and connecting children, families, educators, and providers with resources for prevention and support for mental health conditions.
The campaign is year-round, culminating with a series of awareness events that take place during Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week, May 7-13, 2023.
The Campaign is organized by the Mental Health Association of Maryland (MHAMD) and the Maryland Coalition of Families (MCF) with support from the Maryland Department of Health — Behavioral Health Administration. Together, MHAMD and MCF partner with other organizations who are dedicated to improving children’s mental health.
