Back-to-School Extravaganza kicks off school year!

Families in the Oak Lawn and Hometown areas were in for a treat this past Saturday, August 26, as the Oak Lawn-Hometown School District 123 hosted its "Back to School Extravaganza" at Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School. Throughout the day, an estimated 400-500 people made their way to the event, relishing the festivities.

School District 123 Boosts Communication with SchoolNow

To bolster its communication capabilities, Oak Lawn-Hometown School District 123 announced its partnership with SchoolNow, a leading mass communication platform tailored for one-to-many notifications. Designed to facilitate rapid and wide-reaching alerts, SchoolNow allows the district and individual schools to convey urgent and general announcements via voice, text, and email.

The Bear Way

The Hannum Bears have been busy with learning positive behavior called the 'Bear Way'. The 'Bear Way' is part of our district-wide PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Supports) program that teaches students positive behaviors that are expected at school. The three behaviors that we teach are: Be Respectful, Be Responsible and Be Safe.

Mrs. Grabarek’s class taking a brain break. Research by Cohen (2021) found “incorporating breaks into learning plays just as important a role as practice in learning a new skill”. This is where our brains “compress and imprint” new information.

Camp Kindergarten has begun!

This year, Kindergarten started with a different look. On Friday, August 29, students arrived at 9:30 with their supplies AND their parents. They entered the room and found their seats, unloaded their supplies and hung up their backpacks.

Welcome to Kindergarten

Kindergarteners rocked their first day on Friday, August 25, 2023. The morning was filled with meeting new friends for parents and students. The Sward PTA provided a delicious welcome breakfast allowing families to meet each other and how to become involved in the numerous activities PTA offers.

Cougar Camp!

On Thursday August 24th, students participated in Cougar Camp. Cougar Camp consisted of going over our Cool Tools and the positive actions they support. These tools help students understand the power of words and sayings that will help us ensure a great school year. "Choosing Your Words Wisely" when speaking with peers and school staff.
