Cucinella Weekly Wrap-Up #6
Week of October 9, 2023
"If you can dream it, you can do it." - Walt Disney
Week Six:
It was another busy week here at Cucinella. The week began with a full day of professional development for our dedicated faculty members. During this time, our 4th and 5th grade teachers continued their third day of intensive Responsive Classroom training, while educators in the other grade levels actively participated in workshops covering student data analysis and curriculum. These professional growth opportunities equip our teachers with the tools to deliver exceptional educational experiences for our students.
Fun Run Part 2- On Tuesday, our Kindergarten through Fifth grade students participated in the fun run. Students took advantage of the beautiful weather and spent some time outside for a great cause! The students thoroughly enjoyed their time running around the track as the teachers tallied their laps and enthusiastically cheered them on. The event was filled with music, balloons, lots of water, and an abundance of joy! We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated Cucinella PTO volunteers who played an integral role in creating a fantastic day for our students! Also, many thanks to Mrs. McCool who spearheaded the school's efforts and kept our students and staff up-to-date with Fun Run news in the weeks leading up to the event. And lastly, a special shout out to Nellie, our mascot, who helped keep the energy high as he cheered on the students. This year's Fun Run allowed us to raise close to $30,000 towards our outdoor learning structure project here at Cucinella. Thank you to everyone who helped support this great cause!
Fire Prevention Week: On Friday, members of the Schooley's Mountain Fire Company visited Cucinella to teach our students about fire safety and give them a tour of a fire truck. We'd like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to our local fire department for their invaluable contribution to our 1st graders' safety education. The firefighters did an outstanding job teaching our young students about fire safety. Their dedication and commitment to our community's well-being are truly commendable. Thank you for helping our children learn essential life-saving skills in such an engaging and informative way!

MAP Testing
This week our 4th and 5th grade students will participate in the NWEA's MAP assessment on Tuesday and Wednesday. The students will take two online assessments, one in ELA and one in Math. The results from these assessments allow teachers to gauge current academic levels and identify areas of strength and weakness. This then helps the teachers develop lessons that address the specific needs of their students.
Click this link for a quick video explaining what the MAP Growth assessment is all about. More information about NWEA and their assessments can be found here.
Please remind your children to bring their Chromebooks and headphones to school.
White Cane Awareness Day
October is Blindness Awareness month which brings a heightened focus on the blind and visually impaired community and the realities of living without sight.
U.S. White Cane Safety Day is observed annually on October 15. It's a day dedicated to visually impaired people. The white cane represents their remarkable achievements and symbolizes their independence in the world.
In light of White Cane Safety Day, it's a good time to remind our school community to be aware of someone using a white cane - when they are in the hallways, staircases and around the community!
Remember that someone using a white cane has difficulty seeing you, so in order to keep everyone safe we need to be aware of our surroundings!
WHY WHITE CANE SAFETY DAY IS IMPORTANT?
There are millions of visually impaired people...
It is estimated that over 250 million people worldwide are visually impaired. White Cane Safety Day is a day to appreciate the achievements of blind people.
It is a reminder to help those who are visually impaired...
This day gives an opportunity to reach out to the people that might need your help. You can attend meetings and events organized on White Cane Safety Day and do something that will help visually impaired people.
It is a day to celebrate the symbol of independence...
White canes are the symbol of independence for the visually impaired. This day calls for learning and educating people about the importance of this tool, and celebrating this symbol of independence.
