Corona High School - A Tradition of Excellence Since 1896
Greetings, Panther Nation!
As busy as things get this time of year, it is also the time to celebrate and recognize many of our amazing student success stories leading up to next month's Senior Awards Night and ultimately, graduation. Our val/sals have been previously announced, the RCOE Academic Awards have been held, and other awards/banquets are still to come. Please help us in keeping our students focused on their academics to have a strong finish to the school year!

CAASPP/SBAC
- First, students may qualify for a potential grade bump in ELA and/or math, depending on their passing score (it varies for AP courses). Although the grade bump won't take effect until next school year when we receive the official results, it will reflect on this year's grades/GPA. Essentially, a D can become a C, a C becomes a B, and a B becomes and A. Please reach out to your student's ELA/math teacher for further clarification.
- Second, students can potentially demonstrate that they are ready for college-level ELA and math courses. Our state has eliminated remedial ELA and math classes at the college level (community and university) and instead will require students to concurrently enroll in an additional support class if they have not demonstrated they are "college ready."
The bottom line is that these tests can have a personal impact on our students and we want them all to take this seriously. Please ensure that your child gets plenty of rest the night before his/her test date and and nutritious breakfast. Should you have any questions about this or any other school-related issue, feel free to reach out to our front office.

Health Careers Pathway (HCP)
- Students in our HCP Medical Anatomy class learned the basics of electrocardiogramas (EKG) and used leads to trace their own heart's electrical events. A major component of this pathway is to provide students with hands-on learning experiences where they can immediately apply what they are learning. Upon graduation, they will be ready to either enter the workforce or continue their education at a post-secondary institution or college.
- In our Sports Medicine class, students learned about Cupping Therapy and Tecnica Gavilán, which is a system of manual therapy. This is one of our capstone courses where students get to apply what they've learned over their four years in HCP.

AVID
- Well it has been another busy month for AVID at Corona High! On March 27th we held our third annual ABC day (AVID Builds Community Day)! We had fun participating in team building activities, Jennie Berrera was our student speaker (she got to deliver her speech in preparation for her AVID RIMS debut at UCR next month), and we also had multiple AVID alumni come and give various presentations on college life as well as careers after college.
- On Wed April 10th and April 17th, AVID seniors interviewed incoming 8th graders for our AVID program. It was a great opportunity to explain how AVID works in high school and the advantages provided, in addition to learning more about our future AVID students. We were also able to provide information about the AVID STEM summer bridge program that CHS is offering for our third year!
- We are excited to announce that John Villalobos was selected as a Questbridge College Prep Scholar! He was one of 3,123 students selected from a large pool of over 10,800 high school juniors nationwide that were evaluated on academic excellence, personal qualities, and financial need. As a college prep scholar he will participate in the National College Match, through which he could receive a full four-year scholarship to any Ivy League school. Join us in wishing him the best of luck on this journey!
- Eduardo Santana and Daisy Rosendo will be attending the 42nd Annual Youth Citizenship Seminar at Pepperdine University in Malibu. Only 250 students were accepted to attend this prestigious week-long residential seminar focused on service & leadership. Congratulations on this wonderful opportunity to grow as leaders!
- On Friday April 19th, we were able to have a Fun Friday! Seniors were able to offer advice to the freshmen while building connections and enjoying the opportunity to play Jenga, Connect 4, and frisbee golf. Juniors were also able to relieve some of the stress from SAT and SBAC testing!

- Baseball: On Tuesday, April 23rd our Panthers travelled to 2nd place Norco High School for the chance to clinch the Big VIII title for the third consecutive year. After a tough close game, we came out on top with a 6-5 victory to claim the title! As official Big VIII champs, we will be hosting a 1st Round CIF Playoff game sometime next week against a soon-to-be-announced opponent. We wrapped up our regular season play at home as we hosted Norco and came out victorious with a score of 8-6. Congratulations the 2019 Big VIII League Champions!
- Baseball Misc: We would like to give a huge shout out to Mr. Kenny Pfitzer (parent of senior, Mersadies) for giving our bullpen cart a big league upgrade through Zero to 60 Designs (https://www.zeroto60designs.com)! They added a hydraulic bed, a new bumping sound system, and a few other bells and whistles (see pictures below). THANK YOU!
- Track: Our Panthers competed at league finals on April 25th and 8 of our athletes qualified for CIF prelims! Our league is extremely competitive and in order to advance to CIF, competitors have to place top 3 in their respective event. We have 3 league champs, 3 that made 2nd Team All-League, and 3 that are 3rd Team All-League. CIF prelims will be held at Trabuco Hills High School on May 4th. Congratulations to our athletes!
