Shawnee Middle School Presents Guided Inquiry Design
Tolin then introduced Carol Jones, SMS librarian, who described Guided Inquiry Design and listed the state and national awards the school has received because of students' experience with the framework.
Tolin then introduced Jayme Hutchcraft, literature teacher, who described how 7th graders used Guided Inquiry Design last year in a cross-curricular unit involving geography, English, and literature courses. Hutchcraft then called on Sammy Thomas, Khloe Tungate, Alisha Patel, and Noah Bass, SMS students, who each gave a brief summary of the topics they researched using Guided Inquiry Design. They also described podcasts they each created and how they all felt like they were experts in their chosen topics.
Espolt said, "We keep asking ourselves what makes Shawnee Schools different and what makes us at the top of our game. This presentation shows what makes us different." He said Tolin, along with assistant principals Levi Dobrinski and Hannah Holland, do an outstanding job, and he praised the district leadership of Dr. Teresa Wilkerson and Jackie Noble. He said he was proud to watch these students come forward to speak about their work.

Reports from Superintendent and Central Office Staff
- Negotiated agreements for support and certified staff are finished. This year paraprofessionals will be getting a raise. Last year, bus drivers and monitors received a raise, and the district plans to focus on one category of support each year.
- Espolt reported that Sequoyah and Will Rogers will be able to continue the after-school program at both schools even though they were not awarded state grants that support those programs. Dr. Jess Koch and Jackie Noble have worked very hard to find funding to help those programs continue, he said. The after-school programs are now slightly smaller than they have been in previous years, but the plan is to apply for the grants again this spring.
- Espolt shared about different tornado recovery projects going on across the district.
Dr. Teresa Wilkerson, assistant superintendent, shared information about Shawnee High School's cohort graduation rates, college remediation trends, and ACT scores. Wilkerson also shared steps Shawnee High School and Shawnee Middle School are taking to support all students in their academic goals.
