KCS AVID Student of the Month-Karns High School

KCS AVID Student of the Month is Carma Luster, a Freshman at Karns High School. Karyn Lee, the Freshman AVID Elective Teacher recognizes Carma for her hard work not only in her AVID elective class but her ability to utilize the skills she is learning in AVID in her content area classes. Carma is applying the writing and note-taking strategies she learns in her AVID elective class across all disciplines. Way to go Carma for being a great example of a focused AVID student!

KCS AVID School Virtual Visits

Michelle Staal has been working with AVID schools to check-in virtually to offer support for this school year. These meetings started with AVID coordinators through district meetings and schoolwide planning support then focused on new elective teachers in order to offer elective class planning and tutorial guidance. In the second quarter, the focus will continue to be meeting with all AVID elective teachers on their plan time for 20-30 minutes to continue to collaborate and support during this school year. If any AVID school administrator would like to schedule an additional meeting to discuss their needs or plans for their AVID schoolwide focus, please contact Michelle or Casey Robison. We are always excited and willing to collaborate to build our AVID schools.

Professional Development Opportunities

AVID 101: AVID Schoolwide vs. the AVID ELective class (Canvas Module)

This module is intended for new hires. Participants will earn 1 hour of in-service credit upon completion. This module will explain what AVID schoolwide means for their building, the different elements of WICOR, and the elements of the AVID elective class. Share this URL with anyone interested in participating. It will remain open until December 20, 2020.

AVID Elective Teacher/Coordinator Virtual Workshops: Tutorial Focus

This workshop is being offered to AVID Elective teachers and coordinators through AVID Eastern Regional Office. It will cover the alignments and refinements to the AVID Tutorial Process that was released this summer from AVID National Center. There will also be a discussion on implementing virtual tutorials. For sessions off-contract time, inservice credit can be awarded. If an administrator is willing to allow teachers to attend on contract time, money for subs should come from the school's allocation. This workshop series offers 5 sessions with a variety of dates and times to choose from. For more information and to register with AVID, please refer to MyAVID under "Event Registration". Schools can also reach out to Michelle Staal for registration assistance if needed.
