Silver Lake Intermediate November 17, 2023
SLI Families:
During the month of November, there is a focus on gratitude. We are so lucky to be part of our students' lives. We hope our SLI families feel the same way about our staff! Educating intermediate school students truly is a calling.
A heartfelt thank you to our families and students for the participation in our NJHS Food Drive. We were able to donate 855 food items for community families for Thanksgiving.
Best wishes for a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. I hope it is filled with food, laughter, love and shopping (if you dare go out to the stores or if you surf the web for the best deals).
There will be no newsletter next week because there are only two days, but please see the section on Illness in this newsletter. We have seen an increase in student illness.
Stay warm this weekend and Happy Thanksgiving,
Mrs. Jill Marr

Poinsettia Fundraiser for our Silver Lake Music Department
The Silver Lake Music Department again needs your help to raise money for our summer music camp/lesson scholarship fund during our 12th annual poinsettia sale. This year we would like to be able to give at least another 10 scholarships of $200 each to deserving band, choir, and orchestra students. Monetary donations to the scholarship fund are welcome as well. The more people you tell about our wonderful scholarship program (like relatives, co-workers, and friends), the more scholarships we will be able to give! (The power of ONE—if every music family in our program bought ONE poinsettia or donated ONE $5 amount, we would easily surpass our fundraising goal.)
The poinsettias you purchase will decorate our gym for our 7/8 grade holiday concert on Tuesday, December 19. The plants can be picked up after that concert or during the school day on Wednesday, December 20.
Orders are being done through the OASD Web Store. A direct link to the store is: https://oconomowoc.revtrak.net/is/sli/sli-theater-music/SLI-Music-Fundraiser/
Orders are due by Monday, November 20. An informational sheet is attached to this email that you can give to your relatives, co-workers, and friends. Thank you in advance for making our scholarship fund grow—we know that Silver Lake families can help us meet our twelfth year goal!
Sincerely,

Thanksgiving Food Drive a SUCCESS!!!!
We are so thankful for the final push of collecting food items for our Thanksgiving Food Drive in conjunction with the YMCA. SLI collected 855 items. Seventh grade brought in the most items with 368. 6th grade was close behind with 311 items. This is almost 100 items more than last year.

6th Grade Spider Simulation
In science class, the students are working in a spider simulation to see how traits are passed among a families and generations of spiders! They will soon transition into learning about human genetics! The students really enjoy this interactive example of reproduction in nature!
Mrs. Teske received the Chain of Awesomeness from Jy Schade who in turn gave it to Nathan A. Nathan is a true example of awesomeness! He is a hard worker, a creative thinker, and an excellent participant in the classroom! He is kind, encouraging, and SO fun to be around. Mrs. Teske considers herself so lucky to have Nathan in her class! Thank you Mrs. Teske for recognizing Nathan.
Mrs. Wan, our Chinese teacher, received the Chain of Awesomeness from Emily S. Lyla S. is a shining example of awesomeness! Her dedication to learning Chinese is truly inspiring. Not only is she a hardworking student, but she also goes above and beyond to support her classmates. Lyla's kindness and lovely nature make her a joy to be around. What sets Lyla apart is not only her commitment to learning but also the beauty of her Chinese handwriting, which is truly remarkable. Mrs. Wan feels fortunate to have Lyla in the Chinese class, and she is undoubtedly deserving of the Chain of Awesomeness!

Illness
Cold and flu season is upon us and general illness, Influenza, RSV, and COVID-19 continue to be reported as widespread across the United States. While we know that illnesses are common at this time of year, I am reaching out to remind everyone of our health practices at school and our illness guidelines to keep our students, staff, and schools as healthy as possible during this time of year.
Health Practices at School:
- Our school will continue to be cleaned and sanitized daily and nightly, with high-touch surfaces receiving additional cleaning throughout the day.
- Staff will continue to encourage good hand hygiene routines throughout the day.
- Students who are feeling unwell will be given a pass to go to the health room for evaluation and parents will be contacted when a child needs to be sent home.
Illness Guideline Reminders:
- We strongly encourage you to monitor your child’s health continually. It is important to be mindful of any illness symptoms that your child may have BEFORE sending them to school.
- Please keep your child home from school if they are ill.
- If your child is staying home due to illness, please contact our attendance line to report the absence and illness symptoms. 262-560-4302
- If your child experiences fever, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea as their only symptoms, they may return to school 24-hours after the symptom has resolved.
- If your child experiences multiple symptoms or symptoms that could indicate COVID-19, please refer to our OASD Illness Guidelines. OASD Illness Guidelines
Thank you for your partnership to keep our school healthy.

Work Permits
Parents of students 16 and younger seeking a work permit, will now log on to the Department of Workforce Developments page and use their permit application tool. Here is the link: Work Permit.
This new system will allow you to apply for a permit 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from any computer, tablet or smartphone. You will make your payment through the system as well. The department will mail a paper copy of the permit directly to your child's employer.

IN NEED OF BUS DRIVERS
We Need More Substitutes!
Our school needs more short-term substitute teachers, paraprofessionals, and custodians - can you help?
As a short-term sub, you have the flexibility to choose which school you would like to work at, and what schedule works best for you. Use this online form for a fast and easy application process if you’re interested in joining the OASD as a short-term substitute.
Long-term substitute teacher, paraprofessional, and custodian positions are also available at all of our OASD schools. You can apply online through WECAN for a long-term position by creating an account, then searching for Oconomowoc Area School District in the support staff section.
Please consider working for the OASD and making a positive impact on our school and students!
