Reopening Update
Superintendent Baier provided an update on school reopening. All grade levels are now back on our campuses in-person. Grades TK-6 are back to school in-person 5 days per week, with our junior high school students back for 2 days per week with extended hours on campus.
Junior High
At the junior high level, Egan and Blach extended the in-person school days and all class periods to provide more on-campus time and more direct instruction. This approach provided more in-person time, while maintaining current staffing to provide instructional continuity to our students and protect student-teacher relationships for strong academic performance. If you are interested in more on-campus time for your junior high school student, please contact your junior high school principal to learn about more opportunities.
Summer School
This year, LASD will offer summer school to a larger pool of students who are currently not meeting grade level standards in reading. The first round of invitations will go out this week to families. We are pleased to be able to invite double the number of students as we did last year to reach more students who need a little boost to succeed and be prepared for the upcoming school year.
Planning for the 2021-22 School Year
LASD is planning for a full, 5-day per week in person schedule at all grade levels for the upcoming school year. All plans will adhere to any changes in CDC or California Public Health Department Guidelines.
For more information, check out item H.1. on our agenda online.
2020-21 School Year Parent Survey
Thank you to all of the families who completed the survey. The results will help LASD understand student and family experiences during this challenging year. Data will help inform our plans for the upcoming school year, as well as the current year. Overall, feedback was very positive considering the challenges of the current school year.
Overall themes from the survey included:
93% of families wanting a return to full 5-day per week learning next year
Students are lacking community-building and social-emotional skill building due to online learning
While academic progress seems strong, assessments in the spring/fall will be essential
How the data will inform our next steps:
LASD will continue planning for full 5-day per week in-person learning at all grade levels for the 2021-22 school year
Continue to plan for additional professional development, training and a focus on community-building and social-emotional learning, trauma-based practices as we did for the current school year
Plan for robust assessments in the fall and data-based academic supports for students not meeting grade-level standards
Utilize this data to develop plans for use of available State and Federal funds
For more information, please check out item H.2. on our agenda online.
Spring Student Assessments
Although the state has been granted a waiver for assessments in this school year, LASD wants to ensure students are meeting grade-level standards and are prepared for the next school year. Considering the challenges of implementing standard assessment options this year, LASD will administer the iReady assessment for English Language Arts and Mathematics in Grades 3 & 4. For Grades 5-8, we will use two assessments including iReady for English Language Arts and the CSU/UC Mathematics Diagnostic Testing Project assessment. Parents will receive reports for their student(s) and the administration will present overall student results to the Board in June or August.
Standardized tests are not the only measure of a student's educational progress. We evaluate student success through many other qualitative and quantitative assessments throughout the year and your child's teacher is always an excellent source to discuss any concerns with your child's academic progress. That said, assessments are helpful tools for our schools to understand how to best meet the academic needs of all of our students, particularly in this very unusual school year and into the next year.
