Digital Citizenship
at home and school
Partnership is Paramount
Our goals are for all students to:
- Think critically and evaluate websites, email, and other content online.
- Protect themselves from online threats, including bullying and scams.
- Get smart about sharing: what, when, how, and with whom.
- Be kind and respectful toward other people online, including respecting their privacy.
- Ask for help with tricky situations from a parent or other trusted adult.
My efforts this year have included curricula from Common Sense Media and now I am excited to include a brand-new program I just received from Google and the Internet Keep Safe Coalition called Be Internet Awesome. I will be continuing your students' digital citizenship education throughout the year in their technology classes in addition to their keyboarding, basic skills, and coding work.
I encourage you to ask your student about activities they are participating in and continue the conversation at home. Who knows, you just might learn a thing or two from your student!

Follow the Digital Trail
In this lesson, students followed the digital information trails of two fictional animals. They made observations about the size and content of each trail and connected these observations by thinking critically about what kinds of information they wanted to leave behind.

Parental Controls
It is important to consider parental controls in addition to educating your children about digital citizenship. There are so many wonderful resources in our digital world but, unfortunately, many not-so-wonderful things are only a click away.
