Hometown Stories
Every year at Southwind on night four it is Princess and Warrior night. We gather the girls up to have a Princess Girl's night out, while the boys head to the lake for adventure and "manly" events. As a leader this is my favorite time at camp. We get the opportunity to share with our girls Psalm 139, that the God of the universe "has fearfully and wonderfully made them." We tell them that they have a Heavenly Father that calls them his daughter and wants to ordain them just like a princess.
The leaders from Columbus have had a tradition to gather our girls after this night and give them a bracelet. It is a simple bracelet made of thread with a cross in the center. We tell them to let this be their Ebenezer. We then explain that an Ebenezer in the Old Testament was a reminder to the Israelites of how the Lord had helped them. We talk to them about how our great God wants to have a relationship with them and be their helper through life.
As camp ends and the weeks go by, it is encouraging to see the girls wearing their bracelets. It challenges me to let it be a reminder to pray for them. To pray that the Lord will remind them that He is their ultimate identity and to rest in Him alone.
This is just one little snap shot of ministry in our hometown. Maybe as you go about your day and you see a middle schooler or high schooler you would be reminded to pray. Pray that they would meet someone like a WyldLife or Young Life leader who would tie a bracelet on their wrist and talk to them about the sweet love of Jesus.
