Creston's Weekly Update for Students & Families
Week of August 30, 2020
We have linked the updated Warren Township S.A.F.E. Reopening Plan on our district website, and you will also see the link above. The health department has updated some regulations related to when students/staff can return to school following illness, as well as guidance for families who may need to quarantine due to members’ illness. Please be sure to visit the Warren website (or click the green box above) to read the revisions on pages 9 and 10 in full.
I want to congratulate the nearly 20 CIMS Students who completed their summer work packets! These outstanding students will receive a Warren face covering and a restaurant gift card next week! Well done!
For our virtual students and families:
Don’t forget that we will continue to distribute breakfast and lunches for all VIRTUAL students on Tuesday and Friday mornings from 8AM-9:30AM at Moorhead Community Resource Center. We have also added a Tuesday distribution time in the evening from 4:30-6:30PM at the same location.
- Thank you for continuing to use Moorhead Community Resource Center to support your technology device needs. Their hours of operation are Monday-Friday, from 11-1PM. **Your technology needs can also be supported though submitting a helpdesk ticket through IncidentIQ Support System. If you are in need of a WiFi Hotspot, you can use IncidentIQ Support System to make the request, or you can contact your child's grade-level administrator or counselor.
DRESS CODE:
Be sure to review the dress code with your student and help make sure your child leaves home in school-appropriate clothing and shoes! You can locate a copy of the CIMS Dress Code by clicking here.
CHROMEBOOKS:
Students are responsible for bringing Chromebooks to school each day, charged and ready for their school tasks. Recently, an increased number of students have been leaving Chromebooks on their buses in the morning or afternoon - this is a new routine for everyone! Please encourage your student to keep their Chromebook close and help them establish the routine of bringing it to and from school.
STUDENT ATTENDANCE:
Our students are becoming more familiar with navigating their online platforms, whether on application days at home or for our virtual only learners. See below for details on how parents can access Canvas and ParentVUE to support students' online learning. Please encourage your student to log in to Canvas EVERY DAY, whether it’s an instruction or application day, so they can accomplish their work. Exit tickets (brief tasks consisting of 1 question) are provided on application days to make sure students’ attendance is counted accurately. When students respond to these specific tasks, their attendance is marked as "present" for the application day.
INSTRUCTION & ASSESSMENT
Twice per grading period (nearly once per month), students will complete a language arts assessment and a math assessment. Last week, 7th and 8th graders completed their first language arts assessment of the school year, while our 5th and 6th grade scholars have been individually assessed by their teachers to determine current reading levels. Next week, all students (grades 5-8) will complete their first math assessment of the school year. For now, these assessments are given on instructional days through a platform called Edulastic. The assessments (for both ELA and Math) cover the topics most recently instructed in class.
Each week, teachers can recognize virtual or in-person learners who are doing an awesome job! See below for our most recent Student Shoutouts!
Stay safe!
--Carey Storm, CIMS Principal
MIDTERMS
- If your child just recently began school, they will not be receiving midterm grades. Students in school for 3+ weeks will receive midterm grades for most classes.
- If your student is part of our virtual high ability math courses, they will not be receiving midterm grades given that the course began a bit later than others.
- If you have a 5th or 6th grade VIRTUAL student who recently switched teachers, they will not be receiving midterm grades.
Remember that midterm grades serve as a "checkpoint" on your student's current progress. Midterm grades do not become part of a student's official school record. Given that this is our first time sharing midterm grades digitally, we know there may be some questions. Look for further information in next week's newsletter for clarification on midterm grade access!
PARENTVUE ACCESS
**You will need this access to view student midterm reports once posted in early September!**
As a parent or guardian of a student attending a Warren school, you have online access to your child or children's courses, grades, attendance, discipline, and academic history. As part of our transition to a new student information system called Synergy, the parent portal has been upgraded to Synergy’s ParentVue. This new portal offers parents access to student information via the Web on PCs or tablets or on a smartphone application — providing comprehensive functionality with a touch-friendly, intuitive interface. Parents who had an address in our old system received a letter with instructions on activating a new account. If you are not a new family to the District, please do not use the Online Registration module.
If you are a new family to the District and used the Online Registration module your ParentVue account is already active. If you are not a new family and you did not receive a letter complete the registration form (link HERE) and you will be contacted. After your information is verified, you will receive a username and password.

CANVAS
Students - Please see this short video on how to access Canvas via the "9 dot grid" or bookmarks in your Chrome browser. If you are able to access Canvas in general, but have issues with a particular course, please contact the course instructor/teacher directly.

CAR RIDER DROPOFF
Students are permitted into the building each day around 8:45 a.m. This schedule allows us to make sure student supervision is in place within the building and avoids students having too much "down time" with no class assignment before their school day officially begins at 8:55 a.m.

We are looking forward to kicking off fall sporting events in the coming week! Fall athletes - be sure to check your email for an important message from CIMS Athletic Director, Mr. Apple, for guidance on your practice/game day check-in procedures.
