May 2023 Edition
Principals Corner: Finishing Strong!
With May now here, we are looking at the final seven weeks of the 2022-2023 school year! This means we have a lot of learning still to do, but students who have been putting off turning in their work, or have been absent for various reasons, start to feel the pinch of the end of the semester right around the corner. Our staff is ready to encourage and support our students, ensure they complete their essential learning assignments, and for our seniors especially, are on track to graduate and walk across that stage!
Some of our 9th-11th grade students will be invited to summer school for those that need the credit recovery. More information about summer school will be sent out to individual students and their families. Those not on track for graduation will be strongly encouraged to attend summer school. Our summer school dates are June 26-July 28, Monday through Thursday, 9:00am-12:00pm. Again, more information will be sent out this month for students needing summer school credit recovery.
Please also note that May 12th is a "Snow Make-Up Day" on the CPPS district calendar, which means that we will, in fact, have school that day as we did end up having a snow day earlier this winter.
May 8th-12th is Teacher Appreciation Week! Please consider signing up with the link below for the Parent Advisory Council Teacher Appreciation breakfast on May 10th. Our staff appreciates all of our families and the energy you put in to partner with our school.
In this edition of the Hawks Happenings monthly newsletter we share information with you about student successes, highlight our amazing math instructor Trevor Roberts, share information about June's Graduation Ceremony, and much more.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to us at 509-522-3312.
Thank you, and Go Hawks!

Hawks Teacher Shout Out...Mr. Trevor Roberts!
Question: What made you want to be a teacher?
Roberts: “I’ve wanted to be a teacher since sixth grade. I had Mr. Heitz who was a super engaging science teacher. In one of the first weeks, he was jumping on the tables and doing goofy stuff. I went home and told my mom I wanted to be a teacher and that’s been my plan ever since.”
Question: What do you like most about teaching math to high schoolers?
Roberts: “I enjoy math because you’re either right or wrong. I like that structure and I enjoy that it is like a puzzle. So I like the math and I like the teaching aspect of helping them grow. I could teach whatever as long as I’m working with kids.”
Question: What are some weird or unique ways you help students enjoy learning about math?
Roberts: “I know math is not everyone’s favorite subject so sometimes I try to relate concepts to goofy things like SpongeBob. I try to keep them on their toes. Sometimes the references are hit or miss, but I like to use those analogies. The kids seem to appreciate me making the attempt to use them and I think it helps build positive relationships with the students.”

Graduation Commencement Information for the Class of 2023
College Place High School is excited to celebrate this year's senior class, the Class of 2023. Our Graduation commencement ceremony will be on Saturday, June 10 at 7:00pm, here at the College Place High School Stadium.
Families are encouraged to arrive early to accommodate the anticipated high volume of parking needs. We have partnered with Wal-Mart as an overflow parking area, and have asked our staff to park off-site as well. We are asking our graduates to arrive at 6:15pm that evening in preparation for the ceremony.
There will be no limitation to the number of guests each student can invite to Graduation. Our stadium facilities will also include ground level chair seating for the elderly or those who prefer this option.
We anticipate a wonderful summer evening sunset as the backdrop to this event, however, should the weather forecast look unfavorable, we will communicate with the graduates and their families if we need to move the ceremony indoors. Moving indoors is a last resort. We would rather be outdoors in light rain.
The ceremony will also be livestreamed on our NFHS platform. Here is the link, which we will also post on our social media platforms and school website. https://www.nfhsnetwork.com/schools/college-place-high-school-college-place-wa
We ask that guests refrain from bringing noisemakers to our event, as we want to ensure each graduates name is heard when they cross the stage.

National History Day at State!
This year, four sophomore students advanced to the National History Day competition where they competed to demonstrate their understanding of primary and secondary sources and quality research. This year's NHD theme of Frontiers in History: People, Places and Ideas allowed CPHS students use their World War 2 knowledge from their current history class to dive deeper into a topic of their choice concerning people and ideas that were catalysts in creating change.
Emmalia Castoerna Hartwell and Savannah DeLannoy researched Nancy Harkness Love who paved the pathway for women to join the military
Amelia Ferraro and Benjamin Borth argued that without the enigma machine coding would not have developed so quickly following World War 2.
These students represented CPHS well and are eager to pass down the knowledge they learned about NHD to next year's competing class.
