Oregon Battle of the Books and Brain Bowl
The Siskiyou School children have a deep and rich Waldorf curriculum that really shines through in two competitive extracurricular activities we offer, Oregon Battle of the Books and Middle School Brain Bowl.
Oregon Battle of the Books is an annual state-wide competition that has children read a select set of books (modern and classic) and then answer questions about them. It's fast paced and fun and gets children excited about reading! This year the Siskiyou School had a total of six teams of students form for the competition that is organized and held by Amy Bull (parent to Wyatt in 5th and Cora in 3rd). Participating students in the battles last Friday were: 3rd Grade - Giada, Emmalina, Wren and Cora, Zyler and Ronan; 5th Grade - Brahn, Orin, Finn, Wyatt, Kinich, Leo, Azure, Lila, and Liam; Middle School - Max, Azie, Rye, Nova and Django. Three teams will move on to regional competition.
Brain Bowl is a trivia challenge for Middle School teams that is organized in our region by SOU Youth Programs. School teams travel to other Middle Schools in the valley (as far away as Eagle Point!) to compete. It's a great opportunity for our middle schoolers to see other kids and campuses and to introduce other students and parents to our own school. Our team has been going for 6 years now and we've always come in first or second place in our division! This year the Brain Bowl team included (8th Grade) Nova, Rye, (7th Grade) Zaiden, Malia, Alana, Amara, Cheveyo, Stellan, Devon, Uma, Azie, Leo, Evelyn, Dunya, Lukas, Phinneas, Ania, Layla, and (6th Grade) Sophia. Kristin Beers served as coach and organizer. This year our team came in 2nd place, congrats!
Thanks to the Siskiyou School faculty, parents, and students for supporting these wonderful opportunities for our children to grow and our school showcase their remarkable learning!

8th Grade Project Presentations
We're excited to see 8th grade projects coming up on our school calendar. Next month, the Dragonfly Class will present their 8th grade capstone projects to the Siskiyou School Community. They are asked to describe what topic they chose to study for their project, what they learned over their apprenticeship, and to respond to questions from the live audience. Please note the dates above and plan to join us in Pine Hall.
We’re happy to be able to share our 8th grade project presentations with our wider community over Zoom. A link to join us online will be sent to all currently enrolled parents on Monday, March 11th. You are welcome to tune in and check out the work done by the Dragonfly Class this year, but please, for the safety of our students, do NOT post this link over social media.
8th Grade Project Presentations will also be recorded and available to view through a YouTube link.

1st and 6th Main Lesson Teachers
The Siskiyou School is looking for a 6th grade class teacher and a 1st grade class teacher for the school year 2024-2025. The current 5th grade, called the Raven Class, has had a teacher for their first five years and they are ready to welcome a new class teacher for the middle school years. Our forming first grade will welcome the graduates of our first year of Kindergarten as well as some new friends.
The class teacher is the main holder of a class. They teach their students main lesson and some of the core skills. They oversee their students’ academic progress, guide their social and emotional development, organize field trips, and keep in communication with parents through regular conferences and class meetings. Class teachers are the point person for their students, parents, other teachers and the administration for all matters regarding their class.
We require at least 2 years of teaching experience in the grades. A Waldorf Teacher certificate is also preferable, but we are also open to training a teacher or sending the candidate to Waldorf summer training.
If interested, please send a resume and cover letter to our administrator Aurilia McNamara at Aurilia.mcnamara@siskiyouschool.org. If you have additional questions, please call 541-690-7171. We look forward to hearing from you.
Raven Class - 5th Grade
The fifth grade is fully emersed in their studies of ancient Greece. They are learning about the pantheon of Greek gods, and the important role these gods and goddesses played in the life of ancient Greeks. We are also studying the organization of Greek city-states. What do the city states have in common? What makes them different? We are focusing on the Sparta and Athens.
In April the fifth grade will perform their class play, The Odessey. Then in May, the 5th graders will participate in the Olympiad. A collaborative event with Madrone Waldorf School and Woodland Charter school. These fifth graders will come together to celebrate and demonstrate the skills they have learned this year: running, jumping, wrestling, discuss, and javelin.
It's all Greek to the Raven Class!

Chess Club Update
Hello everyone! It's been great getting to know all of your children in a different way than in math class or at recess (and many for the first time). Chess Club is a very lively and social gathering. It can get loud and sometimes the logistics can be a puzzle to sort, and I definitely have to navigate their desire to get straight to playing versus taking a moment for review and new instruction. But it's been a lot of fun, and I'm really starting to see the quality of the games improve.
The last two meetings we've had continual emphasis on the beginning of the game. Which pieces to move first, developing multiple pieces, castling, common beginner mistakes, the importance of the center of the board, etc. We also looked at the first few moves of the Ruy Lopez, or the Spanish Opening, the oldest, and still one of the most popular ways to begin a game. With that we talked a little more about chess notation and also continued our incremental look into end game patterns. I know a lot of what I say in the instruction time can goes over their heads, depending on where they are in their level of playing. Like any new skill or language, the repetition is what matters most. And they are playing. And they are improving, even if slowly for some. But they seem to be enjoying themselves, and at this point, that's what's most important.
Thank you everyone, Dustin Monda.
