Did you know? Research shows that children of parents who talk to their teens regularly about drugs are 42% less likely to use drugs than those who don't, yet only a quarter of teens report having these conversations.
Parents, let’s start early! The National Family Partnership was established as a nonprofit organization in 1980 by concerned parents who were convinced they should begin to play a leadership role in drug prevention. Today, NFP is a national leader in drug prevention education & advocacy.
The National Family Partnership organized the first Nationwide Red Ribbon Campaign. NFP provides drug awareness by sponsoring the annual National Red Ribbon Campaign™. In response to the murder of DEA Agent Enrique Camarena, angered parents and youth in communities across the country began wearing Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the killing and destruction cause by drugs in America.
Here are some tips about how to start the conversation with your children:
Preschool- Age 7: When you give a fever medicine or antibiotic to your child, discuss why and when medications should be given. Take advantage of “teachable moments.” For example, if you see a movie character smoking a cigarette, talk about smoking and its effects on the body.
Ages 8-12: Open the conversation by asking your children what they think about drugs. Keep it open-ended and non-judgemental. Show your child that you are listening to what they have to say. This will help encourage them to come to you with questions in the future. Stories in the news involving drugs and alcohol can often be a springboard for a conversation with your older child. Red Ribbon Week is another great opportunity to open up a dialogue with your child!
Join us at PONTIAC for our schoolwide recognition of RED RIBBON WEEK. This year’s theme is: Your future is key, so stay drug free! We will focus on our AVID skills, preparing for success!
