Make a funny face, he said....It'll be cute, he said....
Ms. Krohn's ELA class takes a break to ham it up for the camera. This was snapped seconds before gravity came down hard on poor Malaki!

Our All District choir concert featured several great performances by an elementary Honor Choir, HMS beginning and advanced choirs, and the HHS Choir.
8th Grade Events dominate June Calendar
June is chock full of events for 8th graders. Here is a run-down of the month:
- Friday, June 2-Moving Up dance for 8th graders at HHS. Dance runs from 8-10 pm, put on by HHS ASB.
- Wednesday, June 7-Class Day. 8th Graders will attend this annual tradition, where seniors get awards, and then classes assume their spots in the gym for assemblies. This occurs Wednesday afternoon
- Monday, June 12-13-8th Graders will start at HMS then walk up to the high school to get their schedules for next year, meet with their teachers, and take part in activities. This will also happen Tuesday, June 13.
- Monday, June 12-8th grade fines due to HMS office.
- Wednesday, June 14-8th grade locker cleanout/Awards Assembly/Field Day
- Thursday, June 15-Moving Up Assembly @ HHS Gym. 8th Graders will start their day at HMS, and walk up to the gym first thing in the morning for our MANDATORY Moving Up Assembly Practice at 8:20 a.m. This should take about 60-90 minutes. At that point, students can be picked up from the gym to go home and change, or they can head back to HMS. The actual assembly begins at 11:30 a.m. at the HHS Gym. At the conclusion of the assembly, there is an opportunity for pictures. 8th Graders can go directly home if they have a ride, or return to HMS if they need to ride the bus. School is dismissed at 1:20 pm.
- Friday, June 16-Last Day....good luck next year, Grizzlies! School is dismissed at 11:20 a.m.
Spring Spirit Week June 5-9 @ HMS!
Okay...time to dig through the closets looking for lost treasure to gear up for Spring Spirit Week! HMS Leadership saw a fully packed calendar for June and said "you know what we need here? A Spirit Week!" So here is the rundown of days:
Monday-June 5: Decade Day-classes will be assigned a decade (I'm rooting for the 1780's-love me some powdered wigs!) and they dress how they THINK people dressed in those decades. (As a child of the 80's I never wore a Members Only jacket, never had a mohawk, nor did I ever look like Michael J. Fox in the "Back to the Future" movie...there was an unfortunate period of time where I did sport a permed mullet with a bleached rat tail...but the less said about that the better)
Tuesday-June 6: Duo Day- Pick a friend. Dress as something or someone that go together (Salt & Pepper, Batman and Robin, Mr. Cook and Big Bites)
Wednesday-June 7: Concert Day- Dress in concert gear for your favorite band or performer
Thursday-June 8: BBQ Dad vs. Soccer Mom- PLEASE LEAVE ALL BBQ IMPLEMENTS AND JUICE BOXES AT HOME!!!
Friday-June 9: Hawaiian Day- Time to break out the most beautiful piece of fashion in the history of mankind...The Hawaiian shirt! Add some tacky tourist gear....we are talking full on socks AND sandals people!
8th Graders...Upward Bound Needs YOU!
TRIO is a federally funded program, which is housed at Grays Harbor College and contracted with Raymond Jr/Sr High, Ocosta Jr/Sr High, and Hoquiam High School. At TRIO, we are determined to close academic gaps and find resolutions for academic barriers. We want our students to be prepared for college and will provide the following services: tutoring, one-on-one counseling, academic advising, college exposure and planning, career counseling, cultural awareness events, and more.
We know that college is not for everyone, but we will help your students explore options for life after high school whether it is going to trade school or the workforce.
While we serve 9th-12th grade, we are recruiting 8th graders to join our Summer Program. This is a great opportunity for students to meet new friends, explore new interests, and prepare for the next academic year. The Summer Program overall enhances student’s academic and social-emotional skills. They also get paid to participate! Students must complete a full week to get a stipend. Students can sign up for one week, two weeks, or all!
The Summer Program offers many exciting and challenging hands-on courses in areas such as:
English, Science, and Mathematics
Financial Literacy
College Prep
Electives such as PE, coding, grade specific seminars, personal exploration and more.
At the end of each week, we will be going on field trips, including a few overnight trips. Our final week of the program is a residential stay at St. Martin’s University. Living on campus is an important part of the college experience, and the residential program provides free on-campus room and board. We will also go on field trips and university tours.
Ms. Andrews Invites You To Take A Little Mental Vacation...

The Bird Housing Market is looking up!!
As the year wraps up in Construction Math/Precision Measurement, here's a look back at some of the learning processes that go into the skill development, safety and tool use that students must do so that they can produce projects correctly and safely. Students learn how to safely use the scroll saws and how to properly guide their pieces to end up with clean cuts. Along with the scroll saws, students also learned to use the drill press, battery operated drills, drivers, sanders and proper battery charging.
All of this helped them to complete the end of the year birdhouse projects. Beginning and 1st year students built their houses from a blueprint plan, while the advanced students had to design their own birdhouse, come up with all of the measurements and make a blueprint to build from. Once all of this is done, students have to reduce all of their dimensions in half and either draw an oblique view or the more advanced isometric view of their birdhouses.
HMS Yearbook/Autograph books
Yearbooks are going to be available for the last days of school. Cost is $2 (yes two dollars). A flyer will be coming home Friday, June 2 with more information. Thank you to Ms. Falla who took this on so that kids can collect memorable quotes like "see you next year" and autographs. These will be passed out the last day of school.
Congratulations to our May Rotary Students of the Month
May Rotary Students of the Month:
This month our 8th grade staff chose two deserving students to be honored as the Rotary Students of the month.
- Byron Servellon-Ayala- Parents: Rubia Ayala-Vega & James Vega-Ayala. The 8th grade staff wanted to recognize Byron for his kindness, his hard work, and his citizenship. He is involved in Soccer, Basketball and Football, and is a TA in PE. Jenson loves playing video games, and riding his bike in his spare time. His favorite class at HMS is US History with Ms. Folkers because it is a class that gives him confidence, and the workload is manageable. He is proud of the hard work he has put in in school to achieve his grades. He is looking forward to the greater choice of classes, making new friends, being in a new environment, and showing what he can do next year in high school.
- Piper Stankavich- Parents Cathi and Doug Stankavich. Piper is being recognized for her work ethic, citizenship, involvement, and academic effort. She is involved in basketball, volleyball, track, and soccer and is a member of National Junior Honor Society. Piper's hobbies are reading and hanging out with her dog. She is most proud of the hard work she has put into her grades, and she has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout middle school.
