Meet Mara Tran, District Instructional Program Specialists
My name is Mara Tran and I’m the District Instructional Program Specialist at ROYAL ISD. I’m so excited to be part of the Department of Teaching and Learning, providing instructional support and tools for the teachers here.
I started my career in the educational field in 2010 as the Algebra II teacher in Lamar Consolidated High School. Between 2010 and 2015, I not only taught Algebra II, Algebra I, Geometry and Pre-Cal, I was also the advisor of the National Honors Society. My favorite moment was always witnessing the joy and victory of our high school seniors walking across the stage of the Katy ISD Merrill Center receiving their hard-earned diplomas.
In 2015, I became the Algebra I teacher at Cardiff Junior High, KATY ISD. After just one year, I was voted to be the Teacher of the Year 2017 due to the exceptional academic growth of my students.
In 2017-2018 I was offered to be the math instructional coach at the same school. I was honored to be mentoring math teachers and learning all about various strategies and resources. My favorite moment there was attending the “IC Fridays” where all the secondary instructional coaches gathered and “sharpened” one another.
In 2018 I was blessed to have an opportunity to be the Assistant Principal at Royal Early Childhood Center. Talk about changes - from teaching secondary students, to mentoring teachers, and now being the AP for our youngest students! God always has His unique way to make me learn! I was surrounded by a very supportive and nurturing administrative team there, growing every day professionally. I had to step out of my comfort zone almost daily! I’m forever grateful for such experiences!
In January 2021, I was once again blessed with this amazing opportunity to be working with Dr. Joy Wilson in the Department of Teaching and Learning. Since then, I never stopped learning and I love every minute of it! I’m excited to be able to share what I learn with you via our 5-min PD segment on our departmental newsletters! If there is any feedback or advice, always feel free to email me. Life is not a destination, but a journey!
On the personal side, I was born in Hong Kong when it was still under British rule. We moved to Canada when I was 16 years old. I graduated from the University of Alberta with a Honors B.Sc. in Chemistry then I pursued a M.Sc. in Biochemistry form McGill University. I started my career as a Research Scientist in Southern California. I met my husband there. We were blessed with two children - a sophomore in College and a junior in High School. They are my pride and joy (most of the time)!
