A Note from Mrs. Pitts
Dear RES Families and Supporters,
We have had some families reach out to us with the question, how do I talk to my child about grief or loss? This can feel like a challenging topic; an emotional burden; a scary thing you want to avoid. While all of these emotions and interpretations of the topic of death can be true, one thing remains undeniable: you are equipped to handle this. There are a few common threads to this difficult conversation:
Be truthful. Keep it simple. Create an environment that is comfortable, calm and safe.
If you have a conversation with your child about death, speak slowly and calmly. Your tone can show that this is an important topic, but you don't want to speak so seriously that it sounds scary or like someone has done something wrong. So pick a time that is calm, remove distractions like your phone or the tv, and cuddle close to remind your child that he/she is SAFE. Allow time for silence...don't forget this...silence can feel awkward and uncomfortable, but silence at a time like this can give kids the space to ask questions. These questions will be important. If your child asks a question, and you don't know how to respond, it is okay to say, "I don't know the answer to that. What do you think?" Finally…there is a lot of power in redirection and distraction. Keep your child focused on the things he/she can control (school, their feelings, their behavior, etc).
Check out some of these websites. We have referred back to these many times because we find the information they provide to be straight-forward, easy to understand, and in simple terms.

https://www.babycenter.com/0_how-to-talk-to-your-grade-schooler-about-death_67896.bc
But remember...these websites refer to talking to your child when he/she has experienced a loss. When supporting your child with the knowledge or understanding about another’s loss, a focus should remain on how your child can feel safe and secure, and how he/she can be a friend for their classmate or friend.
As the educators and supporters of your children in the Rye School District, we understand our role in offering the children stability, compassion, comfort and promise. When you trust us with your child’s heart, please know we take that responsibility very seriously. If you have concerns about how your child is handling news or a difficult conversation, please let us know. Our RES team (Principal, School Counselor, Teachers, etc) is available to work with you to support your child and help them to find success and comfort here at school.
We truly appreciate your support,
Michelle Pitts and Lori Arsenault

Playground Update!
The current playground, for students in preschool through Grade Two, was built almost 30 years ago and is very much in need of an update to be more inclusive, welcoming, and fun for all children in the Rye community.
In order to meet our goal of having a new playground for the 2023-2024 school year, we need the community's help. We are seeking donations to help us meet our goal of $200,000. Through a partnership with the Rye PTA we have already raised over $80,000, but we still need your help.
