Coltrane-Webb Elementary hosted a North Carolina Science Olympiad regional tournament on Saturday, April 18. Five teams competed in eighteen events covering all areas of science. Coltrane-Webb's team took first place and every student won at least one medal! This was the first elementary Science Olympiad tournament to be hosted in Cabarrus County. Students, parents, and volunteers had a great time celebrating science!

WTVI PBS in Charlotte, NC hosts the 2nd Annual STEM Awards Show. The awards recognize 6th – 12th grade students and teachers from the station’s 13-county viewing area who exhibit excellence in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Our very own CCHS STEM Junior, Matt Foulks, takes away a top prize! Matt created a Design & Gaming field project for students to use in their Math II course. This exciting and educational game focuses on functions and other areas. Matt not only helped develop one of the games but also led tutorials within the class so that students could adapt to the schools new UNITY program. He led tutorials on coding and programming.

We are so proud of you Matt and CCHS!

Sophomores, Wyatt Barrier and Yarince Pascual, took home first place at the 2nd Annual Cabarrus County Schools App and Programming Challenge! The challenge is designed to give students the chance to create an app or program to solve an educational or community issue. The students must design an ethically viable solution.

The winning app allows users to take notes and browse the Internet simultaneously in the same screen so that one doesn’t have to go back and forth between apps. I want that!

On April 15th STEM Coach, Megan McNutt and Assistant Principal, Alyn Szymanski presented at the Scaling STEM: Strategies That Engage Minds™ conference. They shared their experience in STEM with a session entitled S.T.E.M.: Making sure Engineering is an Integral Part of your Curriculum. We are proud of you!

NASA invited JN Fries to participate in their NASA STEM Mania - Rockets to Race Cars Event. The event focused on the force of DRAG and how it can be a bad thing in motorsports but a good thing when you are landing the Curiosity rover on Mars. Guest speakers were NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson and NASA engineer Jill Prince!! A big thank you to their TF, Erica Williard, for making sure this online event was successful!
