The Wayland Union School Board met on Monday, April 10, 2023 at Dorr Elementary for their regular meeting.

Presentations/Reports

Recognition of Outstanding People in Education Award Nominee
  • Outstanding People in Education is an award the Allegan County School Board Association established 14 years ago. The award recognizes individuals who are excelling in their field and/or are making an impact in the quality of education in Allegan County. This year we had 31 nominations.


Report from MACUL Conference

  • Pete Zondervan discussed what he took away from the conference which focused on technology advancements in education. The conference topics he heard about included artificial intelligence, Google tips, transformation of education for tomorrows students, LAUNCH, gadgets, vocabulary vibes, supporting the science of reading, and the impact of 30 seconds.


Report from MASB Legal Issues Workshop

  • Theresa Dobry shared that the workshop went over the Right to Work, Open Meeting Act, committee meetings, parental rights, and reviewed the ISD elections. Norm Taylor thought the workshop was a good review for current board members and allowed new board members the opportunity to ask a lot of questions.


Governance Team Good News

  • Pete Zondervan thought the hail Wayland received last week was cool, and he shared that his daughter is excited to be selected for the Little Miss Wayland Contest. Tim Reeves shared that the district didn't receive too much damage from the hail storm.


Student Board Members Report

  • Ava Makowski and Summer Morrison discussed that this week is testing week for Freshman - Juniors, while Seniors will be attending a decision day celebration at Allegan VoTech Center. High School events coming up include a bake sale, kick ball fundraiser event, and the musical. Many congratulations go to the robotics team for being state champions and breaking a world record. Spring sports are also in full swing.

Administration Reports

Assistant Superintendent of Finance & Operations
  • Pat Velie gave the budget versus actual report for April 10, 2023.


Assistant Superintendent of Instructions

  • Teresa Fulk discussed that spring testing is beginning for all schools except Baker. She also reviewed the program Clayful, which was discussed a the last work session. Clayful is an optional mental health coaching program the district would like to offer students.


Superintendent

  • Tim Reeves reminded the board that this month there is a Carpenter Millwright tour. In addition, with robotics winning the state competition, the team is looking for support in raising $25,000 to attend the World Competition in Texas. The district has agreed to give the team $5,000.

New Business - Discussion Items

Food Service Contract
  • Pat Velie discussed that we are entering year 4 of the 5 year contract with Chartwells. MDE said food service companies could seek up to an 8.8% renewal increase, Chartwells is proposing. 5.5% increase.


Glass Replacement for Pine St. doors

  • Pat Velie discussed the pre-bid meeting to replace the original glass in the Pine Street classroom doors with security glass, not bullet proof. The bid was about $60,000 through SA Morman.


Middle School Cafeteria Renovations

  • Pat Velie stated that the district has excess food service funds, which are separate from general funds. The fund has over $400,000. The Middle School Cafeteria servery and kitchen equipment is original to the building therefore 30 years old. MS is currently serving about 700 students. The goal is to create moveable service stations to improve the flow of traffic depending on the daily food offerings.


Discussion Regarding Electoral Representative for the June 5, 2023 Biennial Allegan Area Educational Service Agency

  • Tim Reeves stated that it is up to the board to nominate who they would like to represent the district at the meeting. The board nominated Norm Taylor with Becky Hohnke as back up.

Board Topics

Jeff Koon mentioned that it was an honor to participate in the OPE nomination committee and to be able to personally congratulate those nominated.


Norm Taylor sends his congratulations to the robotics team.


Becky Hohnke would like to congratulate those nominated for the OPE. She would also like to thank Dorr Elementary for allowing them to use their facilities and she throughly enjoyed the video playing at the start of the meeting. She also sends her congratulations to the robotics team.


Pete Zondervan was also honored to be a member of the OPE nomination committee. He requests that the board come up with a way to honor staff members in the beginning of the year, as well as the end of the year through OPE.


Theresa Dobry sends her congratulations to OPE nominations and the robotics team.


Dan Cassini echoes the same congratulations as the rest of the board to all the outstanding accomplishments within the district.


Tim Reeves introduced and welcomed Enzo Giovannucci on being the newest member of the technology department. He will be in attendance at all future board meetings to help trouble shoot technology.


The meeting adjourned at 8:46pm.
