April 2023 Family Newsletter
Parents and Guardians,
Spring Break
Spring Break is almost here, and the students and staff of Galesburg Junior Senior High School are ready for some rest and relaxation. Spring Break does not signal the end of the school year as there are still over 7 weeks left in the fourth quarter. Please encourage your student to push through to the end of the year.
If your student is looking for something to do over break, they could get involved in providing some form of community service activity. Whether volunteering with a local service club or participating in a community clean-up, this is a great way for students to give back to their community. Service to others has been proven to:
- Increase social-emotional learning
- Improve student outcomes
- Make a more well-rounded student
- Bring joy and healing
- Expose volunteers to new skills and areas of interest
- Widen their worldview
Spring Break for Galesburg CUSD No. 205 students is from April 3rd through April 7th. The 4th quarter school session will resume on April 10th.
Student Testing Series
We appreciate your understanding during the testing season. Your students have shown resiliency over the past month, and for that, they are to be appreciated. Our students in junior high have completed state testing for this school year. When we return from break, we will be testing students at the high school level. Below is a tentative outline of upcoming state testing.
SAT
The SAT is an Illinois High School graduation requirement. This assessment is for all students in grade 11, and any student in grade 12 who missed the assessment the last year. This assessment will be conducted on April 12th, and students will need two #2 pencils and their student ID. Information regarding an approved calculator will be shared with students prior to the test.
PSAT 9 & PSAT 10
The Preliminary SAT (PSAT) is an assessment for students in grades 9 and 10. This assessment will be conducted on April 12th, and students will need two #2 pencils and their student ID. Information regarding an approved calculator will be shared with students prior to the test.
Seniors on April 12th
All students in Grade 12 who have met the ACT requirement will be excused from school on April 12th and are encouraged to use this day to explore career opportunities or make college visits.
Advanced Placement Testing
High School students who are currently taking Advanced Placement courses, and have enrolled in the advanced placement test for their course, will be provided with information regarding their testing date. All Advanced Placement testing dates are determined by the College Board.

Family Entertainment Opportunity
If you are looking for something to do, come see the Galesburg Theater Department's production of The Sponge Bob Musical. Although this is a high school production, the spring musical at Galesburg High School provides the opportunity for students of all ages within our district to play some part. There are three showings this weekend, 7 pm on March 31st and April 1st, and 2 pm on April 2nd. The show is $5 for adults and $3 for children and senior adults. CUSD 205 students and staff are free. Come and enjoy the fun!
Online Safety: What You Need To Know
Galesburg Junior Senior High School will be hosting this needed family engagement event on Thursday, April 13th, from 6-7:30 pm. This event will provide parents with tips on how to supervise their student's social media presence, as well as how to respond to social media problems. This event is free to all students and parents in the 5th through 11th grades. Childcare will be provided. Please don't miss this opportunity, social media issues are a huge distraction to your student's well-being.
Student Council Glow Run
The Galesburg High School Student Council will be conducting the 2nd Annual 5K Glow Run to help raise awareness in the fight against all types of cancer. Students and families are encouraged to register for the event, and part of the registration fee is donated directly to the American Cancer Society. Get your team together today to participate in this wonderful event on April 28th. All ages are welcome.
All Sports Physicals
Don't wait to get your student their sports physical. The Galesburg Athletic Booster Club will be providing an All Sports Physical Night for students entering the junior high and high school grade levels. This event will take place on Thursday, May 25th in the Galesburg High School Fieldhouse, from 5:30-7:30 pm. Note: This physical does not replace the 9th-grade comprehensive medical physical for incoming Freshman students.
In closing, I hope our students and their families have a restful Spring Break. I hope our students return ready to complete the school year. I wish the same for my staff. Thank you for your work so far, and as I have stated before, it is time to "finish the drill" with great effort.
In Silver and Gold,
Mr. Hawkins
