A note from the PSO President
Welcome back Mary Woodward Families! As we settle into the reality that summer is over and fall has arrived, the PSO is diving right in with some fun family events and fundraising for our school.
We started off the year with one of our largest and most exciting fundraisers, the Jog-a-thon! Thank you to everyone that helped to make this a fun and successful event!! Without your dedication and generosity, the PSO could not offer so many amazing opportunities and events to our students!
We are also preparing for the much-anticipated Scholastic Book Fair happening in October. This event is always a favorite for both students and families alike. To see so many students excited about books and reading is sure to put a smile on anyone’s face! If you are able to volunteer, we will take all of the help we can get!
Our school is very fortunate to belong to a community with so many involved families! Did you know that grandparents, aunts, uncles etc… are welcome volunteers? As long as they have completed the required background check, we would love to utilize their time and talents! If you or a family member have a specific interest or maybe specialized connections to the community, reach out to discuss how we can put them to good use!
Are you curious how the PSO works or how we spend all of the money that we raise? Join us on Thursday, October 5th (8:30 am at Mary Woodward) for our first PSO Meeting. We will hear from Mr. Nihill, discuss the PSO budget, sponsored events, learn about how to get more involved and meet other families. We hope that everyone is able to either join us in person or connect virtually. Everyone is welcome!
We are looking forward to another wonderful school year and meeting all of our new Mary Woodward families!

Upcoming Events
Staff Appreciation Caramel Apple Bar
They have survived the first month of school and we want to reward them! So, we are setting up a DIY Caramel Apple and Cider Bar for the staff on Tuesday, October 3rd and could use your help making it happen. If you are willing and able, please sign up here to bring something yummy to the office on Monday, October 2nd.
Book Fair time!
Our ever popular Scholastic Book Fair is returning! The Book Fair will be open during lunch recess and after school October 9-13 (excluding Wednesday because there's no school). Please make plans to stop by and shop! If it isn't convenient to come in to school, you can still shop online and get books shipped directly to you. All sales (whether in person or online) benefit the school library and help keep our book selection current. You may also notice new shelving in the library, which was funded by Scholastic Book Fairs!
Can you help at the Book Fair? We are most in need of volunteers for an hour after school. Please sign up here.

Volunteer Opportunities and Information
Art Lit
For those of you who don't know, Art Lit is a fantastic program that is entirely run by volunteers. Once a month, volunteers gather to learn about an artist and an art project. Then the volunteers teach all they've learned to a class and lead the project. The result is beautiful art hung all over the school!
There are many ways to be involved (even mounting and hanging artwork outside of class time) and NO art experience is necessary! Anyone can help with Art Lit!
We are currently looking for additional volunteers in Orchard, Rice, and Cannon (5th).
The first training will be held on October 4th at 5:30pm in the Maker's Space.
If you have any questions or want to get involved, please email Claire Juarez at artlit@marywoodwardpso.com.
Leaders Needed!
We have been so fortunate to once again have parents step up to make our PSO events possible! Nearly every position has been filled although a few holes remain. We are looking for the following:
- PSO Vice President: shadow the President this year and become the President next year
- Movie Night Chair: assist the previous Movie Chair with movie night in November and run the next movie night in the spring
- Multicultural Night Chair: oversee Multicultural Night in May with the support of a committee
- Afterschool Enrichment: set up activities to take place after school
If you're interested in one of these positions, or in simply getting more information, please contact Bill Brown at volunteers@marywoodwardpso.com.
Soaring Eagle Parking Space
The PSO reserves a premium parking space to be given to one volunteer each month. The lucky volunteer is chosen from a raffle of the top 5 volunteers in the previous month. Their name is added to the sign and they're welcome to park in that space during all hours for the entire month.
For the month of October, our Soaring Eagle Parking Space goes to Kristin Romelhardt. Kristin has already been actively involved in the building and is very busy with her PSO Treasurer role outside of school. She's also starting to tackle prep for the auction! Thank you, Kristin, for all your hard work!
Volunteering in the school
It has been so great getting to know all the new families this year. We are very fortunate to have such an involved and available group of adults supporting the school. Thank you to all those who have already jumped on volunteer opportunities.
If you hope to volunteer at Mary Woodward, please be sure that you submit a background check through TTSD. It is recommended that you complete this process now, to be sure there are no hold ups when you want to start helping out. Feel free to share this link with grandparents, aunts and uncles who might want to join in sometimes. Each background check is valid for 3 years. If you want to check your background check's expiration date, please contact Bill Brown at volunteers@marywoodwardpso.com.
When you log in as a volunteer at school, your hours are automatically recorded. However, if you volunteer outside of school (maybe on party or event prep, for example), please be sure that you submit your hours worked to HelpCounter. Not only will this increase your chance of winning the Soaring Eagle Parking Space, it will also help improve Mary Woodward's school rating.
Allow Me to Introduce........
Parents don't often have the chance to get to know anyone besides the child's classroom teacher and maybe some office staff. This year, the newsletter will feature a couple of staff each month just to help you put a face to some of the names that your student might come home talking about.
Event Recap
Jog-a-thon
The Jog-a-thon was today and the kids ran their little hearts out! We were so lucky to have dry weather after a rainy week!
The running may be over, but the fundraising continues! We are just over 60% of our goal of $35,000. Now is the time to start collecting cash and check donations, especially those based on the number of laps run. Students will be bringing home record of their laps completed today. All donations must be turned in to the office by October 13. Checks can be made out to Mary Woodward PSO.
Summer Reading
Connect with Us
Mary Woodward PSO has an active presence on Facebook and Instagram. At either site, you'll find up-to-date information about upcoming events and other fun reminders. Our social media is the most immediate communication between the PSO and Woodward families, so you are encouraged to check it out! Links to both resources are below.
Jane Waldron is our fantastic social media coordinator. She can be reached at facebook@marywoodwardpso.com if you are running a PSO event that would benefit from online advertising.
Little Ways to Give Back
These are a couple of easy opportunities to donate to Mary Woodward PSO.
We accept donations from Box Tops. All you need is the Box Tops app. Then you just submit photos of your receipts and the app scans for any qualifying purchases. The money goes straight to the PSO!
We also have a BottleDrop account. You can contribute to this two ways.
- Pick up blue BottleDrop bags from the office. Fill them up and drop them off at the BottleDrop location at 14411 SW Pacific Hwy.
- If you already have a BottleDrop account, you can donate from your account balance to the PSO. So, even if you've used the green bags, you can still help out! Go here to log in and donate from your personal account.
Thank you for helping to fund the PSO which supports the school with instructional assistants, fun events, teacher appreciation and many other ways.
