October 28, 2022
A Note from Dr. Hooks
Dear Hyde-Addison ES Families,
Happy Friday! If you have not had an opportunity to review the October issue of the Equity and Anti-Racism Task Force Newsletter, you may use this link to access it.
Thank you to all of the families who have supported "Socktober". As of this afternoon, we have collected 1,458 pairs of brand new socks, as part of our school-wide community service initiative.
We are excited about our family engagement during our Friday school-wide meetings. Please be mindful that families should sit on the bleachers or stand in the back or to either side of the gymnasium. Families are also required to sign in and out and please do not stick visitor badges under, on or around the bleachers or walls.
As you may be aware, yesterday there was an incident with a transportation provider, not related to or used by Hyde-Addison ES. The incident is leading to a suspension of DCPS’ use of that vendor effective immediately. As policy, all contractors in safety-sensitive roles must be properly credentialed and cleared through the DCPS background check process. Per the Child and Youth, Safety and Health Omnibus Amendment Act of 2004 (D.C. Law 15-353, D.C. Official Code § 1-620.31 et seq.), a “safety sensitive” position is defined as “employment in which the District employee has direct contact with children or youth; is entrusted with the direct care and custody of children or youth; and whose performance of his or her duties in the normal course of employment may affect the health, welfare, or safety of children or youth.”

Kindest Regards,
Dr. Calvin Hooks, Principal

NEWS & UPDATES
Portrait Day
The Importance of Sleep for Children
The amount of sleep a child gets is so important for their brain development and we are asking for every family to partner with us by putting their child to bed early enough for them to get the recommended amount of sleep. Our student support team has put together an informational flyer to share some of the research regarding the importance of sleep. If your family has questions or would like to speak with a member of the support team further about concerns they've noticed with regard to their child's sleeping habits, please email hyde.addison@k12.dc.gov to be connected.
SY22-23 Impact Aid Survey
The SY22-23 Impact Aid Survey will be released Tuesday, November 1. Every year, DCPS asks families to complete this survey to generate additional federal funds. This year’s survey will be fully electronic using the Seamless platform and will be open through Thursday, December 22. Please encourage all families to complete one survey per child, not per household, in their preferred language. The electronic surveys and our FAQ document can be found on the Impact Aid webpage.

Halloween at Hyde-Addison
Please note that costume props are often left behind at school or become damaged throughout the day, so it is highly recommended that they are left at home. Costumes of great personal significance are also best reserved for out-of-school activities.
Families who wish to join in the fun can cheer on their child in the Halloween parade by lining up anywhere along the parade route at the times listed below. Students will enjoy a quick fall treat on the playground afterwards before heading back inside to continue the important work of learning!

FALL FEST IS BACK!
Please join the Hyde-Addison PTA for a fun-filled Fall Fest on Friday, November 4, 2022 from 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 pm.
This event is sure to be a blast with visits and photo ops from characters like Spider-Man and Queen Elsa! These two fan favorites will sing and dance with the kids and teach them some super hero skills, including the power of kindness. Food for an early dinner and lots of treats will be available. There will also be games, arts and crafts, and Hyde swag for sale.
Please RSVP so we have an accurate headcount for food and activities.
If you'd like to sign up to help during the event, please click here.
While there's no cost to attend the event, a suggested donation of $5 per family is greatly appreciated to help cover the cost of the event.
We look forward to seeing you on November 4!
