Research and Planning
•Whilst completing the research process, the internet played an important role. I was able to search existing projects which would help me analyse codes and conventions of pop. I came across a variety of digipaks, websites and music videos which I found to be most fitted to pop. One directions digipak is full of visually appealing content. The front cover contains 2 large fun images of the boys messing around. This is appropriate for the target audience of teenage girls as they enjoy seeing their favourite boy band having fun.
•YouTube allowed me to access pop videos such as one direction’s ‘kiss you’ which contains narrative. I watched both narrative and non-narrative videos to see which avenue I would prefer to follow. At the time I found that narrative videos were easily understandable for the audience as the video matched the lyrics of the song. At the time I thought that following a narrative concept would be easier however, after completing the main product I think we would have been able to achieve a successful non-narrative music video.
•Survey monkey was also useful when completing my research. I was able to ask a variety of my target audience what their favourite genre is, if they watch music videos, do they prefer narrative/non narrative videos and so on. From my results of survey monkey I decided that I found that the majority of the response preferred narrative videos as it matches the lyrics of the song. Therefore, I knew that I wanted to pursue this preference.
•Blogger was also a tool used in completing my coursework. As we needed to upload our work onto blogger, it was very helpful because it allows you to upload your work through a variety of social media sites. By using a variety of different social networking websites it makes my posts more interesting to read.
Construction
•We used the Cannon 600DSLR camera so that we could take pictures for the website and digipak. We had a few photo-shoot sessions as we wanted to ensure we had a variety of location and attire. The camera was helpful as the pictures came out in high quality which looked appropriate for both the digipak and website. As we took so many pictures, some of them were put into the gallery page of the website and titled ‘photo-shoot for top of the pops magazine’. Without the camera we would have not been able to create our digipak and have images for the gallery page on the website.
•The recording camera we used is called Sony HDV 100E. We started our initial filming with this camera as it was provided by the media department. However, we filmed the rest of our video with the Sony HDR- CX405 as the quality is better and was easier to carry to our different location points for filming. This camera was easier to use which ensured that everyone in the group could take part in the filming process.
•Wix is website that allows you to create your own website. Wix gives you a variety of templates that allow your website to look professional. Using wix was very easy especially as a beginner which made me feel confident that I would produce a successful website. Via wix I was able to conform to the codes and conventions of a pop website which ensured that my website looked like a real media product.
•Whilst editing our music video, we used final cut express. Final cut express was essential as it allowed us to add effects such as split screen which allows you to see two different scenarios happening at one time. Additionally, we could add lyrics onscreen in different colours which is commonly found in pop videos. One of the most important things final cut pro lets us do was ensure the lip synching was in time with the lyrics of the song which allowed the video to flow naturally. We were able to manipulate parts of the video in terms of slowing some parts/fasten down to create a particular effect such as emphasise.
•InDesign is what our digipak was created on. We used InDesign because it allowed us to input colour, fonts and effects to the digipak. We edited our photos previously on Photoshop as it allowed us to give our pictures the effect we wanted such and zoom focus. InDesign was essential as it allowed us to get the measurements for the side of a real digipak ensuring it would look like a real media product.
Evaluation
•I used Prezi via the internet to complete my first evaluation question. Prezi was effective because it allowed me to input screenshots of mine and existing products in order to show the clear comparisons. Prezi is also fun and interactive and presented question 1 in an easy way to understand.
•For my second evaluation question I used Emaze. Emaze is another presentation website that enables you to present your work in a different way. It is similar to Prezi however is a more animated version.
•As I had answered my third question on Microsoft word, I wanted to find a website that would let me attach the work in a creative way. Scribd lets you do this which is an easy way of presenting your work in a creative way. Scribd allows you to add images and presents your work in a poster type way.
•Finally, my fourth question was created via smore. I like smore because it presents your work in a blog format which makes it easy to read. You can add photos, audio, videos and more to make your smore as fun as you want.
