Soaring Student of the Week!
Students at AES have the opportunity to earn recognition for positive behavior during the week. When staff members see great choices being made, students can receive a SOAR slip with specific praise. Every Friday, the names of every student who earned a SOAR slip are read during the morning opening. All student slips are entered into a drawing, and one student is randomly chosen to receive donuts for his or her class.
This week's Soaring Student was Khalie Welliver from Mrs. Wilson's 1st grade class.
Thank you, Daylight Donuts, for partnering with us in this special recognition for our students!
Phoenix Five: Persistent Winners!
Persistent:
I keep trying and stay positive.
I bounce back when things get tough.
I remain positive.
I keep going when faced with challenges.
Ask your student about the taking ownership in their learning at home and what success criteria they have accomplished.
Questions from the Classroom
Preschool: Have your student show you some of the deep breathing techniques we have learned about in the classroom. (Blow out candles, dragon breathing, bee breathing, bunny breathing, snake breathing, or roller coaster breathing)
Kindergarten: Line up groups of two different types of toys. Match them up to find which group has more and which has less. Try it with other groups of objects around the house. Are there more chairs or tables in the kitchen? Are there more pillows or windows in the living room?
1st grade: Ask your student what the difference is between addition and subtraction. (Addition is putting two or more groups together and subtraction is taking a group of something away from the whole.). Ask them to solve this problem. 8-5=? (8-5=3)
2nd grade: Ask your 2nd grader to share 3 facts they learned this week about owls. A fact is something that is true and can be proven.
3rd grade: What are parts of a paragraph? (A paragraph is made up of a topic sentence, the developing details, and a concluding sentence.)
4th grade: Find a word you aren't familiar with in any piece of writing. How can you use context clues around it to find its meaning?
5th grade: What does it mean "to infer"? (answer: to reach a reasonable conclusion about an idea or event not directly stated in a text based on text clues and background knowledge)
