Anne Arundel County 4-H Happenings
April 2022
Hello 4-H Families
April: Four H's and Thriving Youth
We are now on the last H (Head) and the last piece of the Developmental Context (Youth Engagement) of the 4-H Thriving Model. “I pledge my head to clearer thinking” includes the following skills: decision-making, goal setting, resiliency, and service learning. A goal in our programs is to get youth to look ahead, see themselves doing great things and creating a positive outlook on the future. Allowing them to be fully engaged in different learning environments and challenging them to pursue their own learning helps develop these skills.
Youth will have more buy-in and be more involved when they have a voice in the design and implementation of a program/event. To grow skills, some scaffolding is needed – a service project doesn’t start with planning a large community-wide event – start small and work through accomplishments and setbacks, teaching resiliency, flexibility, and perseverance.
Here are a few suggestions to guide youth to have a voice and be engaged:
- Service projects decided on by youth. Allow time for members to discuss how they can help their community and determine why the assistance is needed.
- Mentoring – pairing new members with seasoned ones is an opportunity for leadership and relationship building.
- Community presentations – be involved in community events, reach out to local leaders, or give an opinion/point of view to an agency/organization. All allow young people to share their ideas and influence their communities.
- Diamond Clover (DC) – MD 4-H’s DC projects have six levels to assist you in moving from simple outreach to a full community project. For additional information click here.
Check out what was shared from our amazing clubs in last month's 'Health for better living ' and developing sense of belonging in the ICYMI section below.
Regards,
Gretchen

Article by Julianna C: The Friendship Outdoor Skills 4-H Club has been working on a Lego Mindstorms robotics project this winter. There are about five people and one robot in each group. Each group chose a name. The groups are: BattleBots, The Outliers, Monstrosity, and Panthers. All groups have successfully completed building the Charlie model robot. Now the groups are working to code Charlie to do a variety of motions and sounds such as making him spin and dance or make him say hello. Some groups have made Charlie play the drums, and others have made him ski!

Volunteer Refresher Course
The state 4-H program is requiring all UME Volunteers who have been a UME Volunteer for 5 or more years to complete the Maryland 4-H Volunteer Refresher Training, if you have not already done so. It never hurts to get updated on information for volunteering with the Maryland 4-H Program. You can complete the Refresher Course anytime from the comfort of your own home by visiting this link.
Helping Hands
We are compiling a list of volunteers, which we are affectionately calling 'Helping Hands', that may be interested in assisting with judging (record books, contests, variety show entries, fair entries), coaching a team, sponsoring an activity club, assisting with Fair set-up, or establishing partnerships. These are simply options, not required tasks, that we need assistance with - most only require a few hours here and there should we put a call out. Many of these volunteer opportunities can come from the community, UME certification is not required. If interested in being on this list, please email Gretchen at gsumbrum@umd.edu.
UNIT/CLUB & GROUP LEADERS HUDDLE
**Every 4-H Unit/Group must have 2 Organizational Leaders.**
We started going through club rosters and noticed clubs without two organizational leaders (OL) fully onboarded/ enrolled for 2022. This is a requirement. Please run a roster to verify that your two leaders are enrolled and Accepted (not submitted).
Please remember you must have at least two certified UME volunteers at every meeting, event, etc. depending on the number of youth participants. The youth:adult ratios are as follows - Clovers (ages 5-7) 5:1; all other 4-H ages 10:1 - yet there's always a min. of two adults in all situations (even if there are only four youth).
Finally, as you are running a roster, please compare the online roster with your club roster. It is not uncommon for a family to choose a club and then not reach out and actually join. So you may have a Jane Doe on your roster that you do not know, has not attended a meeting, nor reached out. If this occurs I would suggest reaching out to the family if your club has room for more members. You can share details and determine if they actually wish to join. You can also let me know and I can remove them from your roster in 4-H online.
Youth and adult leaders should work together to establish the plan allowing youth officers to step up and take responsibility. It may take more time to work through the process, yet once established you will find the time spent is worth the effort. Youth begin to feel a sense of belonging, positive youth-adult relationships are formed, and there is often more youth engagement because the work done is in an area of interest, a spark. The underlined terms are the building blocks of all 4-H programs, the Developmental Context.
HERE'S THE SCOOP
What other resources does my local extension office provide besides 4-H & Youth Development? As mentioned in previous newsletters, every state in the U.S. has a local service called the Cooperative Extension Service. This operation was first formalized by the U.S. government in 1914, instituting an extension service at land-grant universities across the nation. Extension services aim to provide research-backed information to problems you may be facing in the these core areas:
Agriculture/horticulture and Food Systems
Environmental and Natural Resources
Family and Consumer Sciences
4-H Youth Development
Extension is connected directly to universities and extension agents/educators are typically faculty and staff members of your state’s land-grant university system. Every state is a little different in its operations: Some have county offices (like Maryland), some operate on a multi-county basis, and some are more regionally centered. Although each structure is different, the agent/educator’s role is the same. University researchers study topics that are important to industries and also the general public. Agents/educators then take the research data and convert it into usable products and information for the public. They do this by offering free or low-cost workshops, providing services such as field visits and office consultations, and these days, by putting a lot of resources online. Extension also plays a role in the adoption of new techniques and technology in the outlined program areas, ensuring the development of social, economic, and environmental goals. You may be surprised by all the possibilities our local extension office can offer! (See article from our Allegany County Extension office in photo)
