Weekly Update ~ April 30, 2018
2018-19 Class Placement Input - DEADLINE THIS FRIDAY!
Creating balanced class lists that meet the needs of all students is a tremendously difficult job that takes many hours of thoughtful dialogue between classroom teachers, specials area teachers, specialists and the principal. We at Oak Grove take this process very seriously.
We welcome any insight you wish to share about your child. We will take into consideration pertinent information about your child’s learning style and needs, received in writing on or before Friday, May 4th, 2018. While we welcome your input, specific teacher requests will not be honored. Please send your input to me by email at fenton@ogschool.org.
The following describes the process for creating balanced class lists:
Classroom teachers consider the social-emotional and academic needs of each student
Parent input is considered
Grade level teams collaborate to form draft class lists that are balanced in terms of the academic, social and emotional needs as well as considering friendships and other factors
Specialist Team members (social worker, speech, special education, etc.), the Fine Arts Team (Art, Music, P.E.) and the principal provide input as well during this process
Class lists are finalized in August due to account for summer movement. We cannot make changes once this process occurs, as moving one child can disrupt the balance of a class, impacting all students
We strongly believe that this detailed and collaborative process creates learning environments that benefit all students. It is a delicate balancing act which takes much consideration and thought by professionals who know and care about your children.

STAR Assessment next week
Students in Kindergarten will take the Early Literacy Test. In grades 1-8, students will take the Reading and Math STAR assessments. Results will be shared with parents in the weeks following the conclusion of the testing window.
As always, a good night's rest, a healthy breakfast and arriving on time for school are important to help students do their best.
Additional information related to the STAR assessment can be found here.
Oak Grove Communications Survey 2017-2018
This week, every Oak Grove family will receive a communications survey from the District. We are hoping that you will take 5 minutes to provide us with feedback about your experience this year. We've sent a similar survey for the past two years and have received very useful responses each year from over 300 of our families. We hope that you will participate in the survey...we really appreciate your feedback!
You will receive the survey via email. We ask that you complete it by May 14th. Please only fill out one survey per family. The Board of Education and administrative team will use the information as we plan for next year. Thank you!
Curriculum Corner - "Workshop Model"
You may have heard us talk about the Workshop Model for reading and writing. The Workshop Model is not a particular book or resource; it’s an instructional strategy that organizes the class time into different parts to ensure that the students are doing the ‘heavy lifting’ during the lesson.
Utilizing a workshop approach asks the teachers to provide a mini-lesson of direct instruction to the whole class. This is an opportunity to share the learning target and the student goal for the lesson. After the direct instruction takes place, students begin to dig in and practice their skills. This is a chance for students to confer with the teacher one on one or work in small groups to receive additional direct instruction. This time is also an opportunity to have collaborative conversations and engage in individual practice of skills and strategies. This fosters student independence while providing scaffolded support. At the conclusion of the lesson, the teacher facilitates a share out of the learning and utilizes the closing of the lesson to provide any additional points of clarification for next steps. We are excited to use this structure to maximize student learning time in order to help students grow!
Make Your Own Music Video Summer Camp: June 18-22, 2018; 8:30 am - 11:30 am
After a very successful camp last summer, we are delighted to be offering this experience again where incoming 6-8th grade students can direct, edit, and choreograph their own music videos.
Small groups of students will sing their favorite songs. Then they will choreograph and pick filming locations. Next, they record their video using high-quality cameras. Finally, students will edit their video using industry standard software.
Over the 5-day class, the students will learn:
The process of creating a music video and the various associated jobs
Storyboard creation
The basics of video/audio recording and editing
Greenscreen techniques & multi-cam editing
Costs for the class will be $115 for each student. Class size is currently limited to 30 participants. CLICK HERE FOR THE REVTRAK WEB STORE LINK. We also ask that interested students will fill-out this “Class interest survey” so we can can start collecting materials. (https://goo.gl/TFdUmx)
Please feel free to contact Dr. Jason Meltzer (meltzer@ogschool.org) or Mr. Logan Farris (farris@ogschool.org) if you have any questions or are having challenges registering for the class.
We look forward to a very exciting and creative week.

All students watched videos that showed where the country was located, heard fellow Oak Grove students counting and saying hello in other languages. They also created a flag and an art project that taught them more about the country!
This Thursday, we will have an in school parade for all K-4 students to see each other's projects. Help your child dress to represent the country they learned about!

Teacher Appreciation Week
Teacher Appreciation Week is the week of May 7th! All of us at Oak Grove School are beyond fortunate to have our incredible teachers nurturing and guiding the children in our community. Please take a moment to have your child write their teacher(s) a special note letting them know what an important role they play in your child's life. This could be something new that was learned, a silly memory, their favorite thing about them, even a drawing would be wonderful. Your child should bring their letter (s) to school on any day during the week of 5/7 and give it to their teacher. It will give them something to make them smile all week long!
Field Day, May 18th
Field Day will be here before you know it! Let’s hope that the weather is as beautiful as today. We are planning on providing a snack as one of the Field Day stations that morning. It will be Skinny Pop popcorn along with an Icee Pop (same freezer treat that was provided during open houses). If your child can NOT have one or both of these snacks, please send your child to school that morning with a snack they CAN have! Have him/her drop it off to their nurse that morning; K-4 to Nurse Judy in Elementary and 5-8 to Nurse Callie in the Jr. High. They will be sure to bring the snacks to where they need to be. Please e-mail Dana Huennekens, Dlfranz@yahoo.com, with your child’s name in advance telling me what your child can NOT have that morning so that I can provide a list for the snack station volunteers that day. Please let me know by Monday, May 14th! See the Virtual Backpack for nutrition labels for both snacks. Thanks! Dana Huennekens, Dlfranz@yahoo.com
The Oak Grove School Calendar needs your pictures!!
Help us build the 2018-2019 school calendar with your pictures. Please send images taken either at Oak Grove or a school sponsored event, in the original format (ie no Instagram filters) for highest quality. Images should be sent to Leah Parr at dlparr82@gmail.com including the month taken, name and grade of all OGS students pictured. Pictures will be accepted through the end of June.
Save The Date for Family Fest 2018!!!
Mark your calendar and please join us to kick off the 2018-2019 school year with our 3rd Annual Family Fest on Sunday, August 26, 2018. This year's event will bring back some family favorites like the dunk tank, cupcake walk and DJ games as well as some new games and surprises!
Please e-mail Kate Byers (kateGbyers@gmail.com) to volunteer for the planning committee and/or express interest in working a shift the day of the event. This is a GREAT way to get involved in the PTO because most of the planning can be done by e-mail/phone calls and the event takes place before the hectic pace of another school year picks back up! The success of this event depends on our volunteers - thank you in advance for your help!
PTO Chairs
Thanks to everyone who has volunteered to chair our events and programs for next year! We have only 1 committee left that needs a chairperson! The PTO Volunteer Coordinator is a great position for a person who doesn’t have a ton of time to volunteer in person. It simply requires communicating, by email, with our list of PTO Volunteers to fill requests for baked goods and office help. If you have any questions or are interested in signing up, please contact Katrina Treutelaar at Katrinatreutelaar@me.com. Thanks!
PTO Meeting this Wednesday
Please join us for our monthly PTO meeting this Wednesday, May 2nd at 9 AM in the Jr. High Teachers lounge. We will be presenting the 2018-2019 Bylaws and Budget. They will be voted on at our last meeting of the year on Wednesday, May 16. The 2018-2019 Bylaws can be reviewed on the PTO website http://www.ogschool.org/oak-grove-pto. Copies of the 2018-2019 Budget will be available at the meeting. We hope to see you there!

Gala 2018 Experiences
Some of the most memorable components of Gala 2018 are the live and silent auction experiences. It is so fun for our children to spend time with their teachers and mentors out of the classroom. We wanted to share a few snaps of some recent experiences –being nurses for the day (Linde Family), bowling with Ms. Colclasure (Hughes Family) and hitting the ice with Mr. Fenton (DeMoon Family). Thank you again to everyone who supported Oak Grove at our Grove Gala 18!
