What is CareerLabsVR (CLVR)
CareerLabsVR Facilitator Training and Equipment Checkout
What is CareerLabsVR? CareerLabsVR combines career exploration with the immersive capabilities of virtual reality, allowing students to engage with hands-on careers right from the classroom. Instead of passively observing on a computer screen, users are fully immersed in interactive 3D environments. Students experience various tasks directly related to their chosen career field, selecting from 32 career modules. They engage in activities such as reading blueprints, using grinders to cut pipes, or operating cranes, all using the tools standard to their selected trade.
This same CareerLabsVR equipment enabled more than 1300 students across the PLAEA region to participate in hands-on learning over the past year and a half. However, this year, the CareerLabsVR experience will not include a dedicated consultant to guide your students. It's now the perfect opportunity for a local educator to step up and facilitate this valuable experience independently.
Interested educators can log into the AEA Learning System here and complete the CareerLabsVR facilitator training. This training is mandatory prior to checking out the equipment. It ensures that educators are well-prepared to create a productive and safe learning environment while utilizing virtual reality equipment.
Once the training is successfully completed, educators can contact PLAEA's Torrey Proctor to schedule equipment delivery to their school. This seamless process ensures that your students can access the immersive world of CareerLabsVR under the guidance of a skilled facilitator.
I would love to share CareerLabsVR with a select group of your school's name here students before the school year escapes us. Below is an updated list of CareerLabsVR careers. This is easy once a school figures out which students get an opportunity and what date/s work. Some schools have me come and serve 8th-grade career students each quarter, while others have high schoolers sign up voluntarily. This experience has also been tied closely to specific CTE classes. I custom tailor the delivery to the needs of the school. Some schools may want a half day, or even a period to see it in action. Three students can go at once. A typical period length works best by allowing three students to try a few careers. If the goal is to serve many students, then a 30-minute schedule shuffles the most through (close to 36 students in a school day). Please let me know if you have any questions.
Sign up below and a PLAEA representative will contact you to discuss and schedule this opportunity for your students.
Example of tasks in one career module: Pipe Fitter
Those completing the Pipe Fitter VR experience will...
intake audio instructions from your boss via a smartwatch phone call
read a blueprint
accurately measure and mark the pipes with a measuring tape and chalk
tape the circumference of the pipe
apply a face shield and lower it
rotate the pipe while simultaneously cutting it with a grinder
set a flange and butterfly flange onto the ends of a pipe
call the boss via smartwatch if you need help remembering the current task (optional)
repeat tasks without step-by-step instructions once learned
apply a hardhat
use ratchet straps to secure pipes for transportation
utilize a walkie-talkie to communicate with a coworker
direct a crane to move a pipe into position with the proper hand signals
remove ratchet straps
attach flanges to the pipe using an impact drill
manually close a butterfly valve
