JULY 2018 UPDATE
MISSION STATEMENT
3 THINGS FROM OUR MEMBERSHIP MEETING
- 2 Peter 1:3-11 anchors our youth ministry once again in the gospel. The Apostle Peter reminds us that since we have been saved, now "make every effort to supplement your faith..." Spiritual growth doesn't happen by accident. The fullness of life comes when you and I are faithfully living out what God has called us to (i.e. the core values) and by being obedient, we'll start to taste the goodness of this journey.
- A new way to conduct meetings. Below is the form in which we went about our debriefing. Remember, as members we are charged with taking care of our ministry, our people, and our programs. We never "just attend" rather we think through and work through the programs as well as caring for the people in our ministry.
- ACCESS Revamp. After looking over the entire CBC YOUTH ministry, I (Justin) am proposing yet another change in our programming on Friday night. The reasons are listed below.
ACCESS REVAMP 2018-2019
So after thinking long and hard about our youth ministry as a whole, I wanted to shift some things with ACCESS in order to accomplish our mission better for our youth group. I'm looking at this from a top-down perspective, seeing all the pieces move together (not just the youth group, but the church as a whole).
THE PROPOSAL: My proposal is to actually remove Conclave at 6:00pm on Friday and start ACCESS at 7:00. Have games and ice breakers for about 30 minutes and go into worship. From 8:15-9:00 have our time of teaching in the form of seminars or tracks if you will. This would look like something similar to our old SS model. You get to choose one of 4 or 5 seminars to take for the semester. This way, we have consistent teaching (which was only offered at Conclave). I wanted to go this route because of the lack of formal teaching and because all the informal teaching and topical talks can actually be better suited for DGs.
WHY ARE WE CHANGING IT? So again, we're not changing it because it was bad, we're modifying it because we're trying to address the missing needs of our youth group. At this point, we only have 2 times we meet at church - Fridays and Sundays. Sundays are more about community, discipleship, and prayer. Fridays would now be a mixture of community and truth.
WHAT DO WE NEED? Well, of course we're going to need the youth to attend on Fridays but also be determined to learn and actually use this time for growing yourselves. We also need the ACCESS leaders to take part of teaching. In fact, I believe it'd be easier just because we have a set curriculum and material already assigned for the semester.
WHO IS ACCESS FOR NOW? ACCESS is still going to focus on the members of the youth group and to supplement the learning aspect of it. However, it's still open to visitors and non-Christians who want to see how church works but also to dig further into a topic with a consistent class and teacher.
PROPOSED TOPICS: Systematic Theology, New Testament, Old Testament, Study of Worship, Comparative Religions, Book Studies, etc.

RESOURCES YOU NEED TO INVEST IN
Christ is Calling Our Kids to His Adventure
Some of our children will become lawyers, moguls of business, and doctors. Imagine what it would look like if they engaged those professions as “shalom makers.” Pursuing justice, sustenance, and health for those who are living without those things would look very different from pursuing self-interest. How will they produce shalom in their arenas through their very lives, their time, and their finances? An understanding of their identity will amplify and influence their choices in life in ways they could never imagine as they submit to what the Lord has built and called them to be.

#68 - Juneteenth and Systemic Racism
In light of Juneteenth, we discuss systemic racism and why the Church today should care. We’re also joined by Charlie Dates, senior pastor of Progressive Baptist Church in Chicago.
