2022-23 Opening of the School Year
Superintendent McGonagle provided a report to the Board regarding the opening of the school year, which went very smoothly. Schools hosted wonderful community building events prior to the first day of school including Junior High School schedule days, back to school picnics and lemonade socials.
On the first day of school our LASD educational team was very focused on community-building events in their classrooms, welcoming new and veteran students alike. Staff is focused on empowering their students to become independent learners, as well as promoting a culture of inclusion and support to ensure every child's success!
We welcome all of our families, students and staff back to school!

Spring Student Data Review
Thanks to our amazing community of students, teachers, staff, and families, reading achievement in the 2021-22 school year was very impressive. The Board reviewed the DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Early Literacy Skills) data for grades K-3 and the Fountas & Pinnell Reading Benchmark data for all K-8 students. Overall, the data shows only a small number of students falling below grade level benchmarks. Despite the pandemic, reading achievement in LASD remains on par with previous years.
While we are proud of our students' success, we also know some students need additional support to achieve grade level standards. LASD has a strong system in place to identify students who need additional support and provide the personalized instruction they need. All students who were below grade level in Spring assessments were invited to our Summer School program this year, where many students boosted their reading and math skills to start the new school year off on the right foot.

LASD Summer Academy Report
The Board received a report from LASD Summer Academy Principal Claire Griffin. The goals of our summer program are to:
Provide engaging and rigorous program in reading, writing, math, and STEM
Provide a “running start” for students to bridge their current grade to the next year
Build confidence as learners and support skills deficits in some areas
LASD provided rigorous academic instruction and the YMCA supported our students with engaging and fun after school programming. Over 18 days of the full-day summer school program, students made incredible progress in reading and math. Ms. Griffin suggested areas for growth in the program for next year, including breaking students into smaller groups for more focused support and continuing with a high interest STEM program.
We are so proud of our teachers, staff and students whose hard work resulted in great success in our Summer Academy.

Universal Meals Program Update
The Board received information regarding the Universal Meals program, which all school districts across the State have now implemented, including LASD. To improve equity in all California public schools, the State is requiring all districts to provide free meals to all students.
Despite the intense preparation of facilities and increased staffing over the summer, this new meal program has created challenges at many of our school sites. LASD is continuing to improve and reevaluate its meal service to ensure it is as easy as possible for students to access. We appreciate feedback from our students, staff and especially from our parent volunteers who are providing so much support in the ultimate success of our universal meals program. Thank you for your amazing contribution to our schools.
