Hello Canby families,
Welcome to another edition of the CSD Top 3, those three things we think you'd like to know, plus a wellness tip and the school lunch calendars. Enjoy!
Student Spotlight
Canby High School’s thespians just wrapped up their winter production of Oscar Wilde’s classic tale, “The Importance of Being Earnest.”
The cast included Zach Goldbeck as Jack, Alex Calderon as Algernon, Catrin Vockrodt as Gwendolyn, Brynn Spoon as Cecily, Stephanie Haynes as Lady Bracknell, Aleshanee McSpaden as Miss Prism, Lee Hepler as Dr. Chasuble, Bri Voss as Lane, Quinn Benjamin as Merriman, and Luke Viter and Carter Ward as swing understudies.
The play, under the direction of new Adviser Sullivan Mackintosh, was a big hit! Great work thespians!
New School Times Next Year
Beginning in fall of the 2022-23 school year, all Canby schools will have new start and end times.
We believe students in the Canby School District will benefit from the new schedule, which has Baker Prairie and Canby High starting later and elementary and Ninety-One starting earlier.
The schedule is based on educational best practice for student achievement. Research shows that adolescents naturally stay up and wake up later than children ages 5-11. Allowing students to attend school at times that align with their natural sleep schedules has numerous physical, emotional, and educational benefits. We are also excited that the schedule will align with other area school districts, including those schools in our Oregon Schools Activities Association league.
“We want to thank all for their feedback in this process,” Superintendent Dr. Aaron Downs said. “We appreciate our community’s partnership to make the new 2022-23 schedule a great success for students in the Canby School District.”
Staff Appreciation
This month, we have the opportunity to recognize our school counselors and social workers as well as our Student Transportation of America bus drivers!
First off, we will celebrate National School Counseling Week, Feb. 7-11. Thank you to those on our district's counseling team – Stacey Ackerman, Heather Hensley, Amie Mykisen, Colby Scheer, Kelly Siewell, Brittney Harmon, Kelly Nace-Jindrich, Michelle Olson, Elizabeth Sommo, Kate Shively, Janie Brow, Trevor Lockwood, and Bret Curtis – for helping all students succeed. Please join us in thanking a school counselor in the coming weeks!
Then comes School Bus Driver Appreciation Day on Feb. 22. If you or your students ride a bus to or from school or co-curricular activities, consider taking a moment to thank your driver!
Dr. Brent Bauer, a Mayo Clinic internal medicine specialist, has three tips to help you have a healthier winter.
His No. 1 tip is to stay active. If you have the right gear, head outside for a breath of fresh air. Join a gym. Or simply turn up the tunes and dance. Next, he suggests raising the humidity level in your home using a humidifier, which may reduce occurrences of colds and flu. And finally, get some vitamin D.
“We get our vitamin D from the sun. Most of us don’t get a lot of sun in the winter,” Dr. Bauer said. “So many of us start to see low vitamin D in the winter months, and there are a few studies that suggest low vitamin D may make you more susceptible to colds and flu.”
Dr. Bauer does not recommend that everyone take vitamin D supplements, but if you suspect you might be low or you’re over 50, consider having your levels checked.
