School News - A strong start!

Back to School Information: To help accommodate busy families, Western Boone County Community Schools are trying some different formats for sharing back-to-school information this year. Hopefully, you were able to attend Meet the Teacher Night on Aug 7, to relieve any jitters and get immediate questions answered. In upcoming classroom newsletters, teachers will share specific information related to homework routines, classroom expectations, and school procedures. Please be sure you are watching for this communication from school. Teachers will also invite parents to schedule 1-1 parent/teacher meetings for early October. This will provide a chance to meet with your child's teacher and really discuss successes and any concerns which need to be addressed. Please reach out to your child's teacher at any point in time, via email or phone call, to get your questioned answered. You are your child's first and best advocate!

Meeting Students Where They Are: Student are currently participating in NWEA testing. We will repeat these assessments in December and March. The data reveals areas where enrichment and remediation are needed. Each grade level will participate in a daily Success Period where they are working on personal learning goals. We look forward to seeing how they each grow this year! Dyslexia screening is also being conducted with our primary students. Interventions to address early literacy needs will be implemented so students are ready to take on letters and words in continuous text! Information will be shared soon about Accelerated Reader goals. Students will work with their teachers to establish a personal goal for reading points. They are encouraged to read books at their level and take short quizzes to earn points. Teachers help them chart their progress and AR Reward celebrations are held mid-year and end-of-year for students who have reached their goals!

CHESS CLUB ~ NEW Opportunity for Students (Grades 4-6): Thorntown will host its first ever Chess Club starting in September. It is open to the first 20 students to sign up. The club will meet on Tuesdays until 4pm. Students must be picked up promptly at 4:00. There will be a break after September and more info will follow about subsequent club dates. We wanted to assess the level of interest and allow students a chance to try it out before making a longer commitment. Please click here for a sign-up sheet for September!

Parent Involvement: Our Parent/Teacher Organization (PTO) is kicking off the year with the first meeting on Monday, August 21. We will meet in Mrs. Collins' room at 6:30. Enter at door 12. Our PTO is instrumental in supporting the mission of the school. They raise funds to support student programs, they support classroom needs, and they help celebrate successes throughout the year. If you'd like to know more or want to get plugged in, please join us on Monday!

We are excited to welcome parent volunteers and visitors for special events. We ask that visitors arrive after 8:15, to allow us to get through arrival and secure the building, before opening up the sign-in stations. We will not have visitors join students for lunch, as no visitors will be permitted in the cafeteria during meal times. Please note that all volunteers and visitors to the school must scan in with a driver's license or government-issued identification each time they visit. Volunteers will need to complete a criminal background check prior to helping with classrooms or attending field trips. Regular volunteers will still need their identification to be scanned prior to entry each time they visit. Don't leave home without it!
