A Message from the HJIS Student Council

The HJIS Student Council has officially initiated their first event: fundraising for the ravishing bushfires of Australia. We are encouraging students to lead their own events to raise funds and awareness of the situation, subsequently making an impact on the world they live in. As IB students, we aim to be global citizens through helping others, in this case addressing an effect of the climate crisis. We've designated January 27-31 to be our week of fundraising, so we look forward to your contributions!

College Fair

Have you ever wanted to study at a Japanese University in English?

Our College Fair is open to all of our parents and students starting from Grade 8. The College Fair will be joined by families from surrounding international schools as well. This event will feature nearly half of all the Japanese universities that offer English-taught 4 year Degree Programs. It is a great opportunity for students and friends who are interested in earning their degree while living in Japan!

Although the College Fair ends at 4:30 P.M., some of the university representatives might begin packing up around 4:00 P.M., so we advise students, parents, and counselors to plan to arrive well before 4:00 P.M.

If you have questions, suggestions, or concerns please do not hesitate to contact our college counselor at collegecounselor@horizon.ac.jp.

Last Week

ELC LEGOLand Field Trip

For their current unit, How the World Works, students have been learning how buildings and houses are constructed. What better way to further explore than visiting LEGOLand and learn how to construct using LEGO blocks. The students joined a workshop where they put tiny pieces together to make a mouse. They also visited the Miniland to play with an interactive city all made out of Legos! We ended our field trip by watching a 4D LEGO movie.

Grade 2 Straw Towers

This week in Readers Writers Workshop, Grades 2A and 2B built towers out of straws after making a design and creating a hypothesis of how they could make their tower strong and tall. Grade 2 students are focusing on writing like scientists.

Grade 3 & 11 Science

Grade 11 students invited the Grade 3 classes up to their science lab to do some exciting experiments together. Students dissected a fish, extracted DNA from a banana, and made elephant’s toothpaste!

Visit from SCAD

A representative from the Savannah College of Art and Design came to our school to meet with our parents and secondary students. 2 students filled their applications with her and had their application fees waived. In the last 2 months, students have waived 29 application fees by filling their university applications through Horizon's college counseling office!

Horizon Health Corner

Cough and Sneeze Etiquette: Cough and sneeze etiquette refers to simple hygiene practices everybody can take to prevent passing on respiratory infections like cold and flu to other people.

It is especially important that people who are sick with a cold or the flu practice good cough and sneeze etiquette. However, infections such as these can be transmitted even before you feel symptoms like sore throat and cough. Even you’re perfectly healthy, it’s important to practice proper cough and sneeze etiquette.

When someone with a cold or flu infection coughs or sneezes, they release respiratory droplets. These droplets contain cold and flu virus particles that can cause infection if they enter another person’s respiratory tract.

The droplets released during coughing and sneezing may be inhaled, or they may land on a person’s hands or hard surfaces where the virus particles can survive for hours. If a person touches contaminated surfaces the virus particles may be transferred to their hands. If a person touches their face with contaminated hands, it may cause infection.

Good cough and sneeze etiquette involves taking steps to minimize the likelihood that someone else will catch your cold or flu when you cough or sneeze. There are many simple measures you can take.

Wearing a face mask

Consider wearing a face mask when you are sick with a cough or sneezing illness (with or without fever) and you expect to be around other people. The face mask will help protect them from catching your illness.

Cover coughs and sneezes

Cover your mouth and nose every time you cough or sneeze. Use a disposable tissue to cover your mouth or nose if possible. If a cough or sneeze sneaks up on you and no tissue is available, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve. This prevents your hands becoming contaminated with cold or flu viruses.

Ensure your hands are hygienically cleaned

Cough and sneeze etiquette your hands with soap and water for at least 15–20 seconds every time you cough or sneeze. Wash your hands every time you touch a contaminated object like a tissue. If soap and water are not available, use alcohol-based hand sanitising products. These products are also effective in removing cold and flu germs from contaminated hands.
