Update- Transfer Policy
The district has recently updated its transfer policy and sent the information to all district patrons. One important update includes a new provision that states:
- "transfer students will not be required to apply for re-admittance annually. This includes students who are moving from sixth grade to seventh grade and students moving from eighth grade to their freshman year of high school.
In other words, if you are an approved transfer student in good standing, you will not need to fill out a transfer form this year if you plan to stay within the same feeder pattern - even if you are moving on to high school. Only new transfer students will need to apply beginning on March 1, 2019 for the 19-20 school year.
International Night
Here at SMN we have the privilege of having students from a variety of different cultural backgrounds. At International Night they are given a platform to share their home culture and food with our North community.
This night means a lot to our students who may not always have the chance to discuss and celebrate their heritage. They take great pride in who they are and where they are from, and we hope you can attend.
This year International Night will take place in the Field House on March 27th from 6:00-7:30. Please save the date.
Watch this video from last year to see what it is all about.
Some of our countries this year include:
Spain
Netherlands
Morocco
Iraq
Philippines
Nepal
Vietnam
Iran
Croatia
Cuba
Jamaica
And many, many more!

International Baccalaureate
The International Baccalaureate Program (IB) at Shawnee Mission North is a two-year college preparatory program with a comprehensive academic program designed to address the needs of challenge seeking junior and senior students.
IB Current Activities
Students in the North IB Program are continuing an exciting semester of learning and the creating relevant understandings. The courses allow students to experience the rigors of life after high school and give opportunities to develop a growth mindset as well as the grit necessary for success.
Brian Blood and Connor Covel (juniors), who are both International Baccalaureate students, are involved in a wonderful campaign to raise money and awareness for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and its research and support for those suffering from blood cancers. Not only is this campaign a great way to support LLS and their life-saving work, but it’s a great leadership opportunity for the students as they organize, promote, and delegate. The two IB Diploma students who are participating in this effort are including it in their IB learning and demonstration. In addition, students can receive scholarships based on the fundraising and awareness efforts. We are excited about this opportunity to make a difference in our community in this way.
Our students are often engaged in amazing things and this is one more example of the involvement of North’s IB students.
For more information about LLS, please visit www.lls.org.
IB Admissions Process
Currently there is no admissions process to become an IB Diploma candidate. It is an opt-in program. However, there are a few academic requirements that students must meet due to the IB courses that must be taken:
· Students need to have completed their PE, health, fine arts, and computer competency requirements during their 9th and 10th grade years.
· Students must have completed (at a minimum) Spanish 3, French 3 by the end of their 10th grade year.
· Students must have completed (at a minimum) Algebra 2 by the end of their 10th grade year.

DECA Students once again shine brightly at STATE DECA Conference to earn trips to Nationals!
For the 10th Straight year, SM North DECA has qualified multiple students to attend the International Career Development Conference, “ICDC or Nationals”, by competing and excelling at the State Conference earlier this month. This year’s ICDC is in Orlando, FL in late April.
North had two State Champions!! Harden Boldt defended his State title in Automotive Services Marketing by winning one of his two role plays, and finishing an astounding 3rd place out of more than 325 students in his Marketing Test. Brian Blood also won State in his Restaurant and Food Service Management series. He also finished Top 10 in his test, and top 3 in both his role plays. Brian competed at Nationals last year in Atlanta as well.
Calvin Tran and Arthur Bagdasaryan also earned a trip to Nationals in their Marketing Team event. They finished 3rd at State, and placed 2nd in one of their Role Plays. This is the 3rd year that Calvin has qualified for Nationals. Aya AlSaid just missed a chance to attend ICDC for the 2nd straight year, as she placed 4th at State in her Human Resources Management Category, and finished 2nd in one of her role plays.
Jillian Clifford and Macaria Velasquez also finished in the Top 10 at State, finishing 9th in their Buying and Merchandising Team category. They are currently second alternates for attending ICDC. Tyler Ruzich had a very impressive finish in his Marketing Test at State, finishing 5th out of more than 325 students. With Tyler’s finish, North had 8 of our 13 students make it on the stage at State, which is a great percentage!!
Congrats to all the North DECA members on another successful year!
