Summer Check In

Happy Summer, Lake Bluff Crew!


I hope this newsletter finds you well and relaxing somewhere with a book and some sunshine! I know we have been busy in our household with summer school, summer sports, and visits to the pool/park.


This will be my format for a weekly communication with you during the upcoming school year. I hope to have the newsletter to you Sunday evenings, so you get a "peek at the week." For summer hours, I will send another one in August before things ramp back up in our world.


I hope you find it useful, and as always, I welcome any feedback!

Lake Bluff Happenings

So many things to celebrate and honor this summer!


Our Deepest Sympathies:

  • Our community will terribly miss the presence of Mary Kalkopf. Her legacy will live on in the fabric of Lake Bluff's history.
  • We are wrapping our arms around Ann Boyd and her family as they deal with the loss of their son.


Congrats to:

  • Jessica Hau (formerly Hack) on her July 1st wedding
  • Nate Schultz for his new gig as the Authentic Learning Coordinator for the district AND on his engagement to his long-time love!

Paula Berman (6)

Paula is enthusiastic to be a part of the Lake Bluff team and to begin teaching in the neighborhood she, her husband Nate, and her cat Bertha reside in. She enjoys traveling, drawing, and biking, so hopefully you can catch her riding on the Oak Leaf Trail this summer!

Mollie Griffin (K5)

Mollie is joining us from Avon Center School in Round Lake, IL. There she completed her first year of teaching in Kindergarten. She has recently moved to Milwaukee.

Tom Dittl (K5)

Tom is joining us from Milwaukee College Prep where he spent 7 years as a Lead K5 teacher. He lives in Milwaukee with his two daughters, Lorelei and Annalise, and enjoys woodworking, Karaoke, game nights, and cooking.

Tiffany Gaggioli (K5)

Tiffany is joining us from the West Allis-West Milwaukee School District where she taught Kindergarten and first grade for 3 years. She was married last fall and enjoys traveling and trying new restaurants with her husband.

Kathleen Snider (5/6)

Kathleen is a recent UW-Milwaukee graduate and is thrilled to join the Lake Bluff community. She lives on Milwaukee’s East Side and enjoys reading, playing tennis, going for walks with her dog, Rizos, and planning her next travel adventure.

Watch Out, Washington!

EL Leadership Induction

During the week of July 10th, I had the amazing opportunity to go to Washington, DC to experience the Leadership Induction program offered by EL. I was able to meet so many new EL leaders from around the country, as well as some amazing veteran EL leaders! I was able to brainstorm with the infamous Ryan Maxwell, I drank beverages and shared a meal (and a Lyft to the airport) with Ron Berger and Mark Conrad, I laughed, I was inspired, I saw history, and most importantly, I LEARNED!


By Thursday night, I was so up to the brim with new learning, I needed to honor Design Principle #9--Solitude and Reflection--by eating pizza in my hotel room in my PJ's!


This week of awesomeness really set the EL foundation for me. It solidified my understanding, and gave me great connections for the future. I cannot wait to work alongside you this year, as we move into our 3rd year in the credentialing process!

Important Summer Dates

EL Summer Work Sign Up

SLICE is 8/3--- (9am-3pm, SHS) This is a chance to experience a mini-expedition. This will focus on our ELL students. If you haven't signed up, I highly recommend it. It is sure to be an amazing day!

EL 101--Come one, come all, for a great day of EL Basics! I highly recommend all new staff attend (as well as any that want a refresher :)

EXPEDITION PLANNINGS--are happening often in August! Did you sign up with your team yet? We had a great day of planning in June. I hope to see you there!

LEADERSHIP TEAM--we need to meet to finalize the work plan on 8/30. Looking forward to seeing you all!

Food for Thought...

I will try to include an inspirational read or video each week. If you have one to share, please let me know! This is a few years old now, but it warms my heart every time I watch it. "Kids don't learn from people they don't like!"
