December 2023
Happy Holidays!
December is a short month for us with the holiday. The gardens are put to bed for the winter and we are preparing for the new year by applying for grants and lesson planning. We will be adding a few schools to our program in the new year!
This month's Harvest of the Month is carrots. Click the photo for a fun video on the life of a carrot and how they grow from a seed in the soil to the carrots you see on your plate!
November Recap
Buckley
This month at Buckley was full of lessons!
Our SNAP-Ed program taught 1st grade about germs, handwashing, and trying new foods with a tasting of yogurt parfaits. The 3rd and 5th grade learned about MyPlate food groups and helped make veggie bean wraps with cilantro lime drizzle.
In Farm to School, students learned about the different types of soil and the importance of soil in growing our food.
All students enjoyed a taste test of caramelized onion hummus made with onions from the school garden!

Courtade
This month, 2-3rd grade learned about the importance of soil and where our food comes from. They made a massaged kale caesar salad, see below for recipe.
The older students learned about ways to preserve garden produce to last longer and seed saving. They tried a tea with dried basil from the garden.
Big thanks to all of the classes who braved the snow and helped put the garden to bed!
This month's taste test was pumpkin dip made with pumpkins from the Courtade garden! Click the photo for the pumpkin dip recipe.
Northport
The elementary classes helped us to put the garden to bed for winter.
This month's taste test was a roasted squash hummus with squash from the garden. Kindergarten and 3rd grade harvested carrots from the garden in the morning before our taste test to use as dippers!
