National Safe Digging Month!
Spring has sprung, and it's time for National Safe Digging Month! With the warmer weather arriving, many of us will begin working outside on home projects. As we know, before excavation begins on any job site, we call 811. The question is, should you do that at home, too? The answer is YES!
811 is a free statewide service created to reduce damage to underground facilities and promote public safety by lowering the number of damage incidents. This is important because improper digging can be expensive and dangerous. When planning outdoor work that requires digging such as planting a tree, putting in a new children’s play set, or building a fence, be sure to call 811 before you dig. We want you to be able to push your child on a swing or enjoy watching the tree grow in your backyard.
To ensure that you are digging safely, be sure to follow these steps:
1. Plan Your Project – know where you plan to dig.
2. Call 811 – Provide plans for your project: address, contact information, project start date. The number of days it take for 811 to locate varies by state. Click here to see the wait time for each state.
3. Wait For The Marks – Wait for member facility owners or operators to mark the proposed dig site.
4. Respect The Marks – Once all utilities are checked, the ground will be marked with either a dotted line or a flag with “OK” painted on the ground. Dotted lines indicate underground lines and a flag and “OK” mean that there are no facility lines in that location and the area has been checked. Red, yellow, orange and blue markers should be present before you dig, indicating that all necessary utility lines have been checked.
5. Dig With Care - Be sure to hand dig when within two feet of any marked line (varies by state). This will keep you safe from striking any line that may have been unmarked.
Remember, shallow digging is still digging! Don’t turn your small weekend project into a big disruption or a fatal accident. Trust us, your loved ones and community will thank you!

CATCH ONE CHAMPIONS
Congratulations to these employees for receiving high Catch ONE recognition! These employees went above and beyond their daily job functions, which resulted in a positive outcome in the project, team or community. These employees are true examples of our core values. Do you know someone who you would like to nominate? Click here to fill out the nomination form today!
Justin Simpson (Indianapolis, IN)- Justin helped a woman change a tire that blew out very early one morning. This all happened on their job site, in the dark and in the rain. Justin went above and beyond to help ensure the tire was put on properly so that woman could get to work safely. Great work, Justin!
Andy Mooney (Kalkaska, MI)- Andy Mooney did a great job of putting safety first and realizing a potential hazard. He was aware of his surroundings and saw a driver getting ready to put themselves in danger. He immediately got out of his vehicle and stopped the driver before he got into an accident at a four-way intersection. Thank you, Andy, for keeping an eye out for your fellow citizens!
Robert Knieriemen and Timothy Staton (Perrysburg, OH)- Robert and Tim witnessed a car accident while setting up the work zone. A lady drove off the road and hit a telephone pole head-on at about 40 mph. Timothy called 911, and Robert ran up to help the lady out of her car to get her out of danger. They blocked off the road with their cones to keep traffic from driving thru the power lines until police and fire showed up to direct traffic. They represented our reputation and safety core value by going above and beyond the call of duty by helping the driver to safety and preventing others from driving thru dangerous power lines.
