Our PTO has done some wonderful things for our students and staff, and wants to continue that work this year. There are different ways to participate and we would love your support! Joining the PTO is a wonderful way to support your child and our school community!


Students and staff are working hard every day to use every minute to learn and grow together! Please be aware that instructional minutes go from the start of every day to the end of each day. Please try to avoid late arrival and/or early checkout whenever possible. When a student misses class time they are missing instruction. Thank you for your support in making sure that we have every opportunity to support your child in their growth this year! GROW Together: One Steam at a Time!!

Place Value to the 999,999

Mathematicians will review place value and will add values up to the hundred thousands place. Understanding the value through numbers is a foundational skill necessary for all other math.

What is Science?

Scientists will continue to learn about the Scientific Method to prepare for all of the units that they will be working with this year. The Scientific Methods are 1. Ask a Question, 2. Gather Information, 3. Form a Hypothesis, 4. Test the Hypothesis, and 5. Share Results. Understanding what Science is will be the foundation for further learning.

Map Skills

Explorers will continue learning about different map skills. The students will be expected to locate continents and oceans, locate the four hemispheres using longitudinal and latitudinal lines, and understand connections between Earth's systems (cities, states, countries AND forests, oceans, mountains, and rivers).

ELA

In ELA this week 3rd Grade Scholars are continuing their study of Story Elements. Support your child at home by reading with them nightly and asking questions about the reading.

Western Expansion

Explorers continue to study about Miners and Cowboys as part of Westward Expansion. This week Explorers will learn about Native Americans as part of American History.

ELA: Start Novel Study; Root "man, manu"

This week Scholars will begin reading, Sign of the Beaver, as part of their ELA block and support for the 5th grade Social Studies content. Scholars will lean the meaning of the root "man, manu" and the similar meanings of words with this root.

Art

This week Artists in 3rd grade will continue to learn about the Architecture of downtown Blacksburg. Artists in 4th grade will learn about the Value Scale, and 5th graders will learn new techniques in applying the value scale.

Library

Not all sources are created equal! Sometimes information shared on the web is not truthful, or may not be backed by factual information. In Library this week, Scholars will learn about research skills and tips to evaluate information shared on websites.

Weekly Reminders :)

  • Mark your calendars for the upcoming Labor Day Holiday. School will be closed on September 4, 2023.
  • Please support your child by ensuring that their laptops ae charged every day for school!
  • Please turn in a note if your child is out of school for any reason.
  • Please send a note if there is a change in transportation. This note should include the child's first and last name, the change requested, length of the change, and a parent/guardian signature.
  • Pick-up for the Kids Club is in the back loop. Car riders are picked up in the back loop until 2:45. Please do not pick-up up from Kids Club before 2:45. Parents are required to sign their child out from Kids Club.
