The Husky Monthly
Sherman County School Newsletter - September
We are off to a great start to the 23-24 school year! The first few days have been wonderful, welcoming all students back and filling the halls with the positive energy and smiles of the students has been a highlight for us all.
As is the norm with the start every school year, we focus on teaching and reteaching expectations, both school-wide and within each classroom. This month's newsletter is devoted to primarily sharing key areas of the revised student handbook that have already been shared at school with all students.
23-24 Student Handbook
As mentioned at Back to School Night we have several student handbook revisions for this school year. These were shared with students on the first few days of school, are published in the handbook that is linked here, available on our school website, and will be reiterated throughout the school year as we continue to teach and reteach expectations from day to day.
Changes in handbook rules and expectations are never done in a silo. Throughout the past 12 months, the decision-making process included ongoing conversations and dialogue from parents and families, structured meetings and discussions with staff, and feedback and input from students. Administration also considered student behavioral data as it relates to discipline incidents in each of several categories.
Please review the following sections with your student:
🚶♀️Dress Code (pg.24)
Responsibility for dress code and grooming rests primarily with students and their parents/guardians. However, the district expects students’ dress to meet standards which ensure that the following conditions do not exist:
Disruption or interference with the classroom learning environment;
Threat to the health and/or safety of the student concerned or of other students.
Please see the handbook for dress code details.
🚫Anti-Bullying (pg. 27-28)
In alignment with Sherman County School District board policy, no form of harassment, threats, violence, hazing, intimidation, bullying, or cyberbullying will be tolerated. Those guilty of such behavior will receive disciplinary consequences that may include suspension and/or expulsion.
Students who are victims to this type of behavior need to report to a teacher, counselor, or administrator. A student may be subject to discipline up to, and including, expulsion for a violation. A student may also be referred to law enforcement for a violation.
Please see Sherman County School District board policy JFCF-AR for more information.
Oregon state law includes the following definitions of cyberbullying, harassment, intimidation, or bullying:
“Cyberbullying” means the use of any electronic communication device to harass, intimidate or bully.
“Harassment, intimidation or bullying” means any act that:
Substantially interferes with a student’s educational benefits, opportunities, or performance;
Takes place on or immediately adjacent to school grounds, at any school-sponsored activity, on school-provided transportation or at any official school bus stop;
Has the effect of:
Physically harming a student or damaging a student’s property;
Knowingly placing a student in reasonable fear of physical harm to the student or damage to the student’s property; or
Creating a hostile educational environment, including interfering with the psychological well-being of a student; and
May be based on, but not be limited to, the protected class status of a person.
Or. Rev. Stat. § 339.351 (2009)
📞Personal Electronics (pg. 30)
The Sherman County School District understands the importance of technology in today’s society. We are fortunate as a district to be 1:1 with Chrome books for every student. Personal electronics have been a significant disruption to the learning environment over the past school year. They have also contributed to and been involved in many student discipline incidents while here at school and/or during school activities. For the 23-24 school year, the following personal electronic expectations have been established.
All electronic devices including but not limited to cell phones, headphones, & smart watches are to be off and not visible during class time. Cell phones & personal electronics are permitted before and after school, during passing periods, and at lunch, provided such devices are not used in a manner that may violate Board policies, administrative regulations, school or classroom rules, and/or state and federal law.
Students in violation of the cell phone policy may be subject to discipline as follows:
Warning/reminder.
Student turns device in to office - parent notification & referral.
Student turns device in to office- parent notification & referral. Device must be picked up by the student’s parent.
Student checks device in to office daily.
